Editor’s note: How did our resident, uh, resident of Slab City become so enamored of the silver stuff? Well, it turns out he inherited the condition from his father, Jim Von Lossow. In the first edition of Weighing In, AVL chats with JVL about all things leaden.
Giving this a go this week, GolfWRXers. Here’s a new segment where we ask players where they learned about lead tape and what it does for their play. In a game of personal preference and style, the overarching topic may be simple, but there is always more to dig into! Welcome to Weighing in.
First up on Weighing In is my Dad, Jim Von Lossow. He introduced me to the game when I was born! He is a PGA Life Member and a former PGA Tour player (1979-1980). Jim was a tournament player for years and also owned and operated Von’s Golf and Putter Studio in Seattle for 30 years. I grew up in the club shop, so I have seen him work his magic on equipment for decades, and he’s helped thousands around the world with their golf clubs. I thought this would be a fitting intro!
These days, my Dad plays in the weekly games in Spokane, and while retired, he stays busy in the workshop tuning up clubs.
AVL: Where did you find out about lead tape?
The first time I saw lead tape was probably working at the club in my early 20s. Another pro had some on his irons.
AVL: What does it do for your game?
JVL: Without the tape, I’d never be able to feel where the clubhead is, and it would ruin my feel and also my tempo. Heavier for me means a slow takeaway where I can feel the weight of the club. I also use lead tape to test new irons, drivers, or woods and alter ball flight or trajectory.
AVL: What’s your favorite thing you see on Lead Tape Chronicles?
JVL: All the pictures of touring pros with lead tape on putters or any of their clubs. Well-worn lead tape is cool, too.
A few photos of JVL’s setup, below!
