For a club who have spent 73 years of their history in the top division of English football and boast four FA Cups in their trophy cabinet, the past decade or so has been very lean for Bolton Wanderers.
Since their relegation from the Premier League in 2012, the Trotters have played most of their football in the Championship and League One, and even dropped into League Two in 2020 after coming dangerously close to going out of business.
Bolton have generally been on an upward trend over the past five seasons, though, returning to the third tier and continuously challenging at the top of the table as they bid for the place in the Championship that their history, status and 28,000-seater stadium arguably deserves.
They are aiming to exorcise some Wembley ghosts, too, having been heavily tipped to beat Oxford United here in this fixture two years ago, only to lose 2-0. Steven Schumacher’s side are arguably marginal favourites again after spending most of the regular season third in the table before dropping to fifth on the final day of the campaign, although that didn’t harm them in the play-off semi-finals as they saw off Bradford City 2-0 on aggregate.

Stockport County fans may read Bolton’s story and scoff, as they fell much further during their wilderness years.
The Hatters have had quite the ride – and not much of it has been enjoyable – since they last played in the second tier back in 2001/02. They were relegated out of the Football League after 106 years of continuous membership in 2011, but the worst was yet to come as they went down another division two seasons later, dropping into the regionalised National League North.
It took them six years to get out of the sixth tier of English football, before finally sealing a return to the EFL in 2022 in current manager Dave Challinor’s first campaign in charge.
Following promotion from League Two in 2024, Stockport have recorded successive third-place finishes in League One to show they are serious players at this level. They are also aiming to cast off some play-off demons, though, having fallen in the end-of-season shoot-out four times in a row.
