The WTA calendar has rapidly moved on to the Wuhan Open, immediately following the China Open in the schedule.
The two WTA 1000 tournaments take place back-to-back, with Qinwen Zheng having just won the China Open after a final victory over Mirra Andreeva. Andreeva has congratulated Zheng on her success, which represents her first-ever WTA 1000 title.
Both players have since decided to withdraw from the Wuhan Open after their runs at the China Open, where Zheng made history by becoming the first Chinese player to lift the trophy. Also making history in the region once upon a time was Caroline Garcia, who completed the double in 2017, and remains the only player to do so.
Who is the greatest women’s tennis player of all time?
Caroline Garcia won the China Open and Wuhan Open titles in the same year
Garcia made history back in 2017 when she became the first player to win the China Open and Wuhan Open titles in the same season. The French ace, who has since retired from tennis, claimed her first title with a final win over Ashleigh Barty in Wuhan. She also beat the likes of Maria Sakkari and Angelique Kerber en route to lifting the trophy.
Shortly after, the 11-time WTA champion went all the way in Beijing, overcoming Simona Halep in the final. In a superb China Open run, she also overcame the likes of Petra Kvitova and Elina Svitolina. Garcia capped off a fantastic period by reaching the semifinals of the 2017 WTA Finals, with her efforts playing a key role in her rise to her career-high rank of world number four the following year.
| Result | Year | Tournament | Partner | Opponents | Score |
| Win | 2016 | French Open | Kristina Mladenovic | Ekaterina Makarova Elena Vesnina |
6–3, 2–6, 6–4 |
| Loss | 2016 | US Open | Kristina Mladenovic | Bethanie Mattek-Sands Lucie Safarova |
6–2, 6–7(5–7), 4–6 |
| Win | 2022 | French Open | Kristina Mladenovic | Coco Gauff Jessica Pegula |
2–6, 6–3, 6–2 |
As mentioned, Garcia claimed 11 WTA titles and rose as high as number four in her glittering career. And while 2017 was a special year, she did manage to triumph at the 2022 WTA Finals. Having also enjoyed a stellar doubles career, the French icon decided to hang up her racket at the 2025 US Open. She was joined in retirement in New York by fellow superstar Kvitova.
Garcia retired as a two-time Grand Slam doubles champion, with both of her titles having arrived on home soil at the French Open alongside compatriot Kristina Mladenovic. She claimed eight titles in total in the format, and rose as high as second in the world rankings. And her Asian Swing double record is now safe for at least another year, with China Open champion Zheng not playing in Wuhan.
