Jamel Herring retained his gold at BKFC 95, but his boss isn’t thrilled about his performance.
Herring met John Dodson in this past Saturday’s headliner in Newark. Herring, a former world champion in traditional boxing, entered BKFC 95 as the promotion’s bantamweight champion. Just ahead of fight night, BKFC president David Feldman revealed the end of the flyweight division. Dodson was the flyweight champion and he would’ve been presented with two belts had he defeated Herring.
Ultimately, Herring scored the split decision win, utilizing the jab that earned him success as a traditional boxer. For Feldman, the action was lackluster, and he isn’t hiding his feelings about what transpired. During the BKFC 95 post-fight scrum, Feldman said he expects more from Herring in his next outing (via Bloody Elbow).
“I think you guys appreciate that I am always honest and I will say that I was disgusted by the main event tonight,” Feldman said. “I didn’t like it. I get boxing, I get being technical but throwing one shot at a time? Pot shotting? Not really engaging?
“That’s not what we’re doing, we are Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, not ‘Bare Knuckle Boxing’. We’re there to see a fight and I don’t think that we saw a fight. I do think that John Dodson tried to create a fight.
“Jamel Herring is a phenomenal boxer but I think he has got to throw more punches and give us a little bit more action in future.”
Feldman has long touted BKFC for its exciting action and high knockout rate, but Herring was never known as a power puncher. His ring IQ, speed, and technical boxing has long been his identity, but Feldman clearly thinks there’s more that “Semper Fi” can do.
