Arsenal supporters had two very good reasons to celebrate this afternoon as William Saliba made his return to competitive action and Max Dowman produced an outstanding performance in the Under-21s’ 5-2 victory over Aston Villa at Meadow Park.
It was an encouraging afternoon for both players, albeit for very different reasons, as Arsenal’s youngsters also secured their first Premier League 2 victory of the season.

Saliba Takes Another Important Step Towards First-Team Return
Following months on the sidelines with a back injury, Saliba completed the opening 45 minutes alongside Marli Salmon in central defence.
The French international looked composed throughout his appearance, demonstrating his usual confidence in possession and impressive passing range. Although he wasn’t particularly troubled defensively, the opportunity to gain competitive minutes was another important milestone in his recovery.
As we reported yesterday, Mikel Arteta had already explained that Saliba’s omission from the senior squad against Hull City was deliberate, with the defender scheduled to feature for the U21s instead.

His substitution at half-time was planned, suggesting Arsenal are continuing to manage his return carefully rather than rushing him back into first-team action.
With the international break now upon us, Saliba has valuable additional time to build his fitness ahead of Arsenal’s return to Premier League action.
Dowman Steals the Show as Arsenal Score Five
While Saliba’s comeback was undoubtedly significant, it was 16-year-old Max Dowman who provided much of the attacking excitement.
Jeorge Bird’s excellent match report for Arsenal Youth describes how Dowman played the full 90 minutes, contributing a goal and an assist while repeatedly troubling Villa’s defence.

After Cole Brannigan gave the visitors an early lead, Maalik Hashi equalised before Andre Harriman-Annous scored twice to put Arsenal firmly in control.
Dowman played a crucial role in the second goal, helping create the opportunity for Marcell Washington to deliver the cross that Harriman-Annous converted.
The youngster also struck the post and created another excellent opening for James Scanlon before deservedly getting his own name on the scoresheet in the 78th minute.
Jack McGrath briefly reduced the deficit before substitute Evan Mooney completed the scoring.
Dowman’s performance was particularly encouraging following his recent Premier League suspension and unsuccessful appeal. With his first England Under-21 involvement approaching, this was an excellent way to demonstrate his quality and respond positively to that setback.

For Arsenal supporters, the afternoon offered a welcome glimpse of both the present and the future. Saliba is moving closer to his senior return, while Dowman continues to demonstrate why there is so much excitement surrounding his development.
Dowman continues to look a class above at youth level, but with Arsenal chasing major trophies, how should Arteta balance the youngster’s development with the demands of first-team football?
