Novak Djokovic is among the players helping kick-start this year’s Roland Garros, where he meets home favorite Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Djokovic has a tough Roland Garros draw, beginning with the 22-year-old Frenchman, who is certain to receive plenty of support in the opener.

But the Serbian superstar, who is chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title, will also have many boisterous fans in Paris.

The intriguing match-up has now been previewed by Mpetshi Perricard’s coach Greg Rusedski, who has suggested the plan they have to try and pull off an upset against Djokovic.

Which round will Novak Djokovic make at the French Open?

The Serb made the semifinals in 2025…

Former British number one Rusedski told TNT Sports: “With Novak, you can never discount what he can do on a court.

“The greats of our game, they always find a way to raise their game. Especially at the beginning of tournaments.

“No disrespect to Rome, he would have liked a few more matches, but [Dino] Prizmic played an incredible match against him.

“Novak won the first set and lost the next two, but this is a different style match-up.

“Gio has a huge serve, he’s more attacking and likes to come into the net.

“If you let Novak dictate from the back of the court, you’re usually second best.

“We’ve got to get the tactics right, we’ve got to be aggressive and that’s the key against Novak. It’s a wonderful opportunity.”

Of course, suggesting the tactics and actually carrying them out to full impact are two very different things.

But one certainty is that it should be a fantastic test for the young Frenchman, even with the concerns about Djokovic.

The legendary figure has lost his only clay-court match this season, while he just turned 39 earlier in the week.

Adding further intrigue to the round one match at Roland Garros, Mpetshi Perricard and Djokovic have never met on the ATP Tour.

The Serbian enters the Grand Slam clash ranked fourth in the world, with his opponent currently 83rd.
