Following the official preview stream, we now know that the next Magic: The Gathering set, Marvel Super Heroes, will be the biggest Standard-legal set ever, with over 600 mechanically unique cards. That’s not the only way it’s bringing the heat, however, as it will also boast the biggest selection of products you can buy.
While there are a ton of cards coming into this set, not all of them are going to be added to the already huge Standard pool, so you can relax on that front if you were worried about the Standard meta getting even messier.
A Huge Set, For Better Or Worse
Everyone knows size doesn’t matter when it comes to MTG sets, but it’s hard to judge whether it’s going to work for or against Marvel Super Heroes until the set launches.
During a pre-preview press briefing, the set was hyped for having “over 600 mechanically unique cards” by executive producer Athena Froelich, who then confirmed that Marvel Super Heroes is “our largest ever set in terms of unique designs, with a full product suite to match.”
“Mechanically unique” suggests that card variants are not being counted in this number.
We’ll soon know exactly how many cards make up this “over 600” number, but we know that it counts Standard and Commander subsets as well as the new Jumpstart cards, which haven’t yet hit the spotlight.
One thing we do have some insight on is the new and returning mechanics in Marvel Super Heroes, which include Power-Up, Plans, Connive, and Enrage.

This is a remarkably large offering for just one set, but the flipside of the argument is that there is something for everyone. I personally don’t buy whole Play or Collector booster boxes, but do love a good Commander precon, so that’s where my focus will be.
Others may lean into Jumpstart because they enjoy the rapid, random nature of cracking packs, allowing them to start playing games straight away.
The range of products also covers a range of prices, with the Welcome Decks being free for new players who attend a new player event at their local game store, and the Beginner Box returns for new players who want to learn at home, and can easily be found for under $40 at multiple online retailers.
