DMZ mode finally returns alongside Modern Warfare 4, and Infinity Ward has revealed that there will be three different ways to play depending on your preference.
When it first launched with MW2 (2022), the DMZ extraction mode earned itself a dedicated community, but it was very much a first attempt. Now, it’s coming back as the third mode for Modern Warfare 4, and the devs are looking to build on that original version.
It brings the brand-new Hajin map that’s even bigger than Al Mazrah, and features dynamic weather that impacts how a run plays.
MW4 DMZ brings story missions and free roam
But it’s also been revealed that there are multiple distinct ways to tackle DMZ, depending on what you want to achieve. These are: Story Missions, Dynamic Ops, and Free Roam.
As the name suggests, Story Missions are the story of DMZ, taking place within one of the many POIs around Hajin. You’re automatically matched with players who are on the same mission, forcing you to decide whether to team up or take them out.
Dynamic Ops is a bit more random, as you’ll be given a series of objectives to complete when you first drop into a match. These usually revolve around a main goal, such as downloading intel from a room and extracting.
Then, Free Roam gives you the freedom to decide what you want to do. You can focus on looting, getting kills, or even interfering with other squads trying to complete their Story Missions.
All three of these take place at the same time, meaning you’ll likely stumble across different teams doing all of this within the same match.
There are set to be 20 squads of three in every game at launch, which could create chaos as they unexpectedly cross paths while trying to achieve their own goals.
Modern Warfare 4 arrives on October 23, bringing with it plenty of new maps and weapons.
