Qatar and Switzerland face off in California, as the 2026 World Cup continues with an intriguing contest between two sides.
Qatar vs Switzerland key information
Qatar are competing at only their second ever World Cup finals, after debuting in 2022 as the host nation.
Knocked out at the group stages four years ago, not many expect much from the Maroons, who are now led by former Spain boss Julen Lopetegui.
Switzerland come into the 2026 edition off the back of three consecutive Round of 16 finishes in major tournaments in 2022, 2016 and 2012.
Now led by manager Murat Yakin, some of the old guard have stepped aside, with a youthful look to his squad this time around.

Qatar vs Switzerland World Cup 2026 Preview
Lopetegui’s men were then held to a 1-1 draw by El Salvador in their final pre-World Cup friendly on June 6, so their preparations have been far from ideal. They will open their 2026 tournament with a clash against a solid Swiss outfit.
Group B does look rather open, with Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina also in there, and a win in the first match would place the Maroons in an excellent spot to reach the knockout round of a World Cup for the first time in their history.
Akram Afif, Yusuf Abdurisag and Edmilson Junior appear to have emerged as Qatar’s strikers for this summer’s tournament, expected to all operate together in a front three. Afif has 39 goals for his country, so watch out for him.
Switzerland’s best-ever performances at a World Cup came in 1934, 1938 and 1954, as they made it to the quarter-finals. They also haven’t been knocked out in the group stage since 2010, meaning that there is pressure on the current side to deliver.
The Swiss come into this match off the back of a 1-1 draw with Australia in their final pre-World Cup friendly, while they beat Jordan 4-1 at the end of May, so confidence is expected to be fairly high.
There will be plenty of experience in the XI in the shape of Manuel Akanji, Ricardo Rodriguez and Sunderland man Granit Xhaka, while Remo Freuler is set to operate in midfield.
Qatar and Switzerland: Group B
FourFourTwo’s prediction
Qatar 0-2 Switzerland
Switzerland should have just a little more than their Asian counterparts and we expect a win for the ‘away’ side.
