Troy vs. Ole Miss might sound like a midweek game in March, but it’s an elimination game in the College World Series.
The Trojans are starting Tommy Egan, a fifth-year senior who previously played at Iowa Western Community College, Houston and Illinois-Chicago. He is 5-2 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.35 WHIP and 99 strikeouts in 87 innings. He got the start in Game 2 of the Troy Super Regional and allowed five hits and two earned runs in 7 ⅓ innings of a 7-2 win over Little Rock. His previous two appearances, however, did not go so well. He faced Miami twice in the Gainesville Regional and allowed a total of 10 hits and nine earned runs in five innings.
Ole Miss is going with senior Hunter Elliott, one of the stars of the Rebels’ 2022 national championship team. Elliott is 5-3 with a 5.15 ERA and 1.51 WHIP. He has allowed at least four earned runs in three of his last six starts — but those came against Georgia, Arkansas and Arizona State.
