Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced arrives next month on July 9, and ahead of its launch, Ubisoft+ is hosting a free trial from June 18–23, giving you a chance to sample its library – including premium editions and DLC.
The standout of this promotion (as noted by Screen Rant) is that 19 different Assassin’s Creed games are available on the service, from the 2007 original that introduced players to Altaïr and the now-iconic Templar conflict to Shadows, the dual-protagonist entry set during the chaotic twilight of feudal Japan.
The trial only lasts five days, so I wouldn’t recommend jumping into any of the RPG games given the sheer scope of their open worlds. You might also be tempted to take a leap of faith into Assassin’s Creed 3 or Rogue to learn more about the Kenway saga before meeting the swashbuckling Edward Kenway in Black Flag, but since both games take place after his story, they are heavy with spoilers if you haven’t played the games before. Not to mention that AC3 serves as the end of Desmond’s saga, which can be a little confusing if you haven’t played the previous entries.
What Assassin’s Creed Games To Play Before Black Flag Resynced
Instead, I’d recommend playing Freedom Cry, the Black Flag DLC spun into a smaller standalone game starring the escaped-slave-turned-pirate-quartermaster Adéwalé. It takes place 13 years later, with Adéwalé now captaining his own vessel and using his Assassin training to dismantle the slave trade and liberate enslaved people. This expansion won’t be included in Resynced and doesn’t spoil any of the major twists, character deaths, or the conclusion to Edward Kenway’s story. It is a brilliant taste of Black Flag before playing Black Flag — and clocking in at an average of 4–6 hours, it’s the perfect little palate cleanser before trying out the remake.

Assassin’s Creed has become one of the most popular and endearing game series of our time, and the games range from weak to great.
Otherwise, there’s Mirage, which marries the classic Assassin’s Creed formula with the RPG era, and is likewise a DLC-turned-standalone game. Of all the modern entries, it’s the closest in style to the series’ classic roots, and clocks in at just 15–16 hours. You probably won’t finish it in five days, granted, but it’s a solid entry point if you want a tight, narrative-driven experience to prepare for Resynced, and you’ll make far more of a dent in the story than you would Origins, Odyssey, or Valhalla.
