As Brian Schottenheimer is well aware, Quinnen Williams was brought in to help replace Micah Parsons. However, one significant shortfall between the change from Parsons to Williams was the loss of playoff experience. As a former member of the Jets, Williams has yet to play in his first playoff game heading into his eighth season.
Schottenheimer was asked about Williams’ lack of playoff experience by a reporter, according to a Thursday X post from Cowboys reporter Clarence Hill Jr.
Thanks for the submission!

“We are going to get him there,'” he said.

Brian Schottenheimer wasn’t the only significant member of the Cowboys to be asked about Williams, per Hill in a second Thursday post. Prescott was also asked about the pass rusher’s lack of playoff experience. The quarterback offered to help, but argued that he would need Williams’ help after getting him to the playoffs.
“I told him I’ll get you to the playoffs, but I need you to go help us win it,” Prescott said.
Williams has every reason to accept the deal from Prescott, who has been to the playoffs five times. Prescott’s playoff struggles beyond that put plenty of pressure on Williams to deliver, however, as the quarterback has never been to a conference championship.

Quinnen Williams’ contract creates potentially short window for Brian Schottenheimer’s promise

Brian Schottenheimer has made the promise, thinking he may have more than one season to get it done. However, based on Quinnen Williams’ contract, he might get only one shot. According to Spotrac, Williams will lose his contractual protections after the 2026 season, meaning the Cowboys will be financially incentivized to move on in 2027 at the whim of Jerry Jones.
As such, Schottenheimer has every reason to push the Dallas Cowboys to the playoffs this season, which could be one piece of criteria Jones will use to rationalize extending Williams’ protections into future seasons. In other words, Schottenheimer’s abilities could be directly tied to Williams’ chances of getting a new deal.
As such, Schottenheimer’s promise wasn’t just about getting him a new experience. By extension, the comments were a promise to give him an extra leg to stand on in negotiations.
