Tabletop gaming can get intense, but a local card shop in Oregon recently discovered that the competition was getting a little too fragrant. Chronos Games & Gifts, an indie store located in Beaverton, made the ultimate power move by officially suspending its weekly Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments for a week.
The reason? A handful of duelists were rolling into the shop with hygiene so tragic it was actively driving away other customers.
The shop dropped the news on its official Discord server, politely explaining that a combination of bad reviews about player stink and questionable restroom etiquette forced them to hit pause.
When the Ban List Includes Bad Hygiene

Most trading card game bans involve overpowered monsters or broken spell cards, but this particular timeout was entirely biological. According to the shop management, the situation had deteriorated to the point where casual visitors were leaving one-star reviews just from walking into the building.
The store owners reminded the community that they are simply trying to enforce the official Konami guidelines. Back in 2019, Konami famously had to update its global tournament policy to explicitly state that players need to be clean. The rulebook explicitly states that if you or your clothes are excessively dirty or smell bad, you may be penalized or kicked out of the venue.
When the game creators have to codify basic self-care into the official rules, you know the tournament scene has a historic battle on its hands.
The Legendary Tactical Stink
While it sounds like a hilarious isolated incident, veteran card players know that the tournament funk is a long-standing meme with a dark side. Over the years, stories have floated around the community about players who allegedly skip showering on purpose. The theory is that if you smell toxic enough, your opponent will lose their focus, misplay their cards, or simply forfeit the match to escape the blast radius.
And it’s unfortunately not just a Yu-Gi-Oh problem. Anyone in the FGC has probably dealt with friendlies with a funky player. Everyone likes to say it’s Super Smash Bros. specific, but every title is guilty. Street Fighter 6 pro Punk recently called out gamers at Frosty Faustings for smelling bad.
Chronos Games & Gifts is getting plenty of praise online for drawing a line in the sand. Local players are thrilled that the store is prioritizing air quality over tournament turnout. The event suspension is only lasting for seven days, giving the local player base exactly enough time to discover soap, wash their favorite hoodies, and maybe invest in a solid stick of deodorant before the next match.
