But she was quick to reference Keys after her latest win at Wimbledon, having been asked if she herself has ever played on Centre Court at the All England Club.

Pegula told reporters in London that she has never played at the iconic venue, upon which she was asked if that was odd to her.

The WTA number four replied: “Yeah, it’s weird.

“I think it’s weirder for Madi because we say she’s been on tour for, like… She’s like, I feel like I’m 45 years old. She’s a veteran.

“I can’t believe she never played on it. You’ve done well here. What do you mean you haven’t played on it? That was kind of a funny thing.

“Yeah, I played on all the other ones like multiple times, like a lot. I played on [Philippe] Chatrier a ton, [Rod] Laver a ton. I played every match on [Arthur] Ashe last year. Maybe this year we’ll see.”

Pegula is now into her second career quarterfinal at Wimbledon, and may just get her wish this time around.

Her compatriot Keys could also end that surprising drought, but she must first win her fourth round tie against Linda Noskova on Court 1.

Exactly like Pegula, Keys has made the quarterfinal stage twice at the All England Club in London, but no further.

Of course, there was an American playing on Centre Court in last year’s final, when Amanda Anisimova lost to Iga Swiatek.

Along with the Pole, she has already crashed out of this year’s event, but her compatriots Pegula, Keys, Coco Gauff and qualifier Ashlyn Krueger remain.

Pegula is certainly doing her utmost to play a match at the prestigious venue, of which she said: “Yeah, it would be really cool.

“An honor, obviously. I think everybody wants to be on Centre Court Wimbledon at one point. If I get there, it will be even better.

“If I’ve earned my spot there, making a semi, knowing I can get there, that would be awesome. I love Court 1. It’s so nice.

“I think you really get the true Wimbledon experience once you play on at least Court 1, or I’m assuming Centre is even better. You really get the feeling that you’re playing Wimbledon.

“I remember experiencing that the first time when I made the quarter a few years ago. Got to play on Court 1, I think, twice.

“It’s a different feeling I think than when you’re playing on the other courts. I would love to earn my spot to be there, for sure.”

Pegula may just be quietly confident of finally achieving that dream after beating Jovic thanks to their intriguing WTA history.

She also defeated her fellow American in Dubai and Charleston earlier this year, and went on to claim the titles at both tournaments.

Incidentally, after extending her head-to-head record over the youngster to 3-0, Pegula has now beaten Jovic on grass, clay and hard courts.
