Stefanos Tsitsipas had to play in qualifying at the Canadian Open for the first time in his career.

Tsitsipas recently won his first title in 16 months at the Swiss Open after a tricky period of struggling to find both form and fitness.

This enabled the Greek to climb back inside the top 60 of the ATP rankings, which would have been high enough for Tsitsipas to gain direct entry into the Canadian Open.

However, as this came after the entry cut-off, Tsitsipas was forced to play in qualifying in Montreal instead.

Stefanos Tsitsipas will play against Martin Damm Jr. at the Canadian Open

Tsitsipas was the top seed in Canadian Open qualifying, where he would play against wildcard Keegan Rice, who is the current world number 831.

It was a comfortable qualifying match for Tsitsipas, who was able to beat Rice 6-3, 6-4.

This enabled Tsitsipas to reach the main draw in Montreal, where he has been drawn to play against a fellow qualifier in Martin Damm Jr.

Tsitsipas has never played against Damm before, who is the son of former top 50 player Martin Damm, the former Grand Slam doubles champion.

If he is able to beat Damm, Tsitsipas will face 22nd seed Joao Fonseca in the second round of the Canadian Open.

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ previous results at the Canadian Open

Tsitsipas has a very mixed record in his eight previous appearances at the Canadian Open, despite being a former finalist.

In his first ever appearance at the Canadian Open in 2018, Tsitsipas beat the likes of Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem to reach the final, where he lost to Rafael Nadal.

Tsitsipas also reached the Canadian Open semi-finals in 2021, but he has lost his only match at the tournament in his other five appearances in Montreal and Toronto.

As he prepares to play Damm, Tsitsipas will be looking to win his first ever main draw match at the Canadian Open when it has been held in Montreal, having only done so in Toronto.

Tsitsipas will play against Damm at the Canadian Open on Monday, August 3.
