With the trade deadline in Major League Baseball ending on Monday evening, it is probably still too early to start talking about what a team’s magic number is currently. But that is not the case in golf this week, as the Wyndham Championship is upon us, the final event of the regular season, and 70 is indeed the magic number on the PGA Tour here at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
At the conclusion of the Wyndham Championship, scheduled to take place this Sunday evening, it will be the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings who advance to golf’s postseason, the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which begin next week at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn. For those who are not able to land in the top 70 in the standings, they can take some time off and try again in September when the FedEx Fall Series begins.
It is a very strong field this week for the Wyndham with a number of mid-to-upper tier players all jockeying for a postseason position. Cameron Young is your defending champion and is already likely to find himself at the Tour Championship in a few weeks, as he is currently ranked third in the FedEx Cup standings.
Sedgefield Country Club is a Donald Ross design, just like last week in Detroit. In line with this week’s magic number, the golf course is a par 70. It is on the shorter side at just over 7,100 yards. The fairways are tree-lined and very narrow. The course is wall-to-wall Bermudagrass and the greens are fast and slightly above average in size, with the classic Ross humps and bumps and shaved run-off areas.
For the most part it has been the plodders and the short-knockers prevailing here at the Wyndham, like Webb Simpson, J.T. Poston, Lucas Glover, Kevin Kisner, and Aaron Rai. Accuracy off the tee is more important than distance. Most of the past winners at Sedgefield have ranked especially high in Greens in Regulation for the week along with scoring on the par 4s, of which there are 12. The average winning score over the last 10 editions of this event has been 20.5 over par, so holing putts and making birdies is a part of the equation as well.
Course form at Sedgefield is strong and there are plenty of other PGA Tour venues where we see crossover success. TPC Sawgrass may carry the strongest correlation, with Davis Love III, Henrik Stenson, Webb Simpson, Si Woo Kim, and last year’s champ, Young, each having won at both golf courses. Waialae Country Club (Sony Open) in Honolulu is another where many of these same names pop up either in the winner’s circle or at the top of the leaderboard. I also used East Lake Golf Club (Tour Championship) which is another Ross design, Colonial Country Club (Charles Schwab Challenge), Innisbrook (Valspar Championship), TPC River Highlands (Travelers Championship), and TPC Deere Run, home to the John Deere Classic.
Ryan Gerard (30-1)
Gerard has two top-10 finishes in his last two starts and earlier this season, finished runner-up at Waialae and 10th at Colonial. His putting was lights-out last week on the Ross greens in Detroit and he’ll need that to carry over here. Gerard ranks 24th on Tour in SG: Approach and is 37th in Driving Accuracy. Over the last 24 rounds, he is 16th in this field for SG: Par 4s measuring between 400-450 yards and is 13th in Birdie or Better Percentage.
Ryo Hisatsune (55-1)
Putting will be the key for Hisatsune, who ranked second in the field last week in Detroit for Greens in Regulation. He was third here at the Wyndham in 2024, has been as high as sixth at Colonial, fourth at the Valspar, and 13th at the Players Championship. Hisatsune hasn’t missed a cut since January and was ninth a month ago at the John Deere Classic. He ranks 43rd on Tour for SG: Approach and is 36th in Driving Accuracy.
Ben Kohles (60-1)
A five-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour, including a win at the BMW Charity Pro-Am just two months ago in nearby Greer, South Carolina, Kohles has racked up two top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour in his last four starts, one of which a third-place finish at the John Deere. He’s finished as high as seventh at the Valspar Championship and over the last 24 rounds, he ranks fifth in this field for Birdie or Better Percentage, fifth in SG: Approach, and is second in Driving Accuracy.

Matt Wallace (70-1)
Like Gerard, Wallace really had the putter rolling on the Donald Ross-style greens last week in Detroit. He has finished top 30 both here at Sedgefield and at TPC Sawgrass. He’s been top 25 at Colonial and was seventh at the Valspar Championship in 2023. Over the last 24 rounds, Wallace ranks eighth in his field for SG: Putting (Bermudagrass) and is 12th for SG: Approach.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout (85-1)
Is the third time a charm? Maybe. Yes, this is the CB trifecta, having played him at the 3M Open two weeks ago and again last week at the Rocket Classic. He’s never missed a cut here at the Wyndham Championship in five trips to Greensboro and he has top-10 and top-20 finishes up and down the board on our correlated courses. Over the last 24 rounds, Bezuidenhout ranks 26th in this field for Driving Accuracy and is 32nd for SG: Par 4s of 400-450 yards. He ranks 19th on Tour in SG: Putting.
Max McGreevy (145-1)
This week’s long bomb takes us deep down the oddsboard into the triple-digits, to a guy who hasn’t ever missed a cut here at the Wyndham Championship in three visits, and finished fifth in 2022. McGreevy has finished as high as 20th at TPC Sawgrass and is also a perfect 3-for-3 in cuts made at Colonial. Over the last 24 rounds he ranks 36th in this field for SG: Approach, 13th in Driving Accuracy, and is 20th for SG: Par 4s 400-450 yards.
