Naomi Osaka is up and running at the Canadian Open, where she is the 11th seed.
Osaka was handed a bye in round one of the WTA 1000 event, before beating Panna Udvardy 6-2, 6-4 in her opener.
The former world number one now meets 20th seed Elise Mertens at the Canadian Open, which she is using as preparation for the US Open.

Osaka enjoyed a sensational run at the Grand Slam last year, reaching the semifinals before falling to Amanda Anisimova.
She has now looked back on that tournament in New York, where she overcame the likes of Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova.

Talking to the media in Toronto, Osaka was asked how much that venture reminded her that she is capable of making deep runs at Grand Slams.
The four-time major champion responded: “Yeah, I mean, that was definitely a really big confidence booster.
“But it was funny, I was telling Tomasz [Wiktorowski] and my team, like, actually after I lost in the second round of DC last year, I had a team huddle meeting.
“I told them that I think that I’m still one of the best players in the world. And then obviously after that we went to the finals with Montreal, and we did really well in the US Open.
“So a part of me thinks like I was probably confident going into that Slam, and maybe that’s why I did well.
“But it’s something that feels really good in my heart because obviously it’s my favorite tournament.”
Osaka fell to Emma Raducanu in the second round of the Washington Open last year, while this time around she reached the semifinals, losing to Alexandra Eala.

As Osaka alluded to, her exit from Washington proved to be a blessing in disguise for the rest of her hard-court swing.
She bounced back by making it all the way to the final of the Canadian Open, where she was beaten by home favorite Victoria Mboko.
And another hugely impressive run followed at the US Open, which should give her plenty of confidence for this year’s Grand Slam in New York.

Osaka boasts a superb history at the tournament, which she won in both 2018 and 2020 with final wins over Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka respectively.
The 28-year-old has also won the Australian Open twice, while earlier this year she reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the very first time.
