Joao Fonseca earned another big win to book his spot in the fourth round of the Canadian Open.

Fonseca defeated ninth seed Casper Ruud in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, to advance at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

The Brazilian teenager, who beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in his opening matchup in Montreal, will take on Ben Shelton next.

Which Grand Slam title would you like to see Joao Fonseca win?

With his triumph over Ruud, Fonseca has just confirmed the end of a drought lasting almost two decades in men’s tennis.

Young stars at the Canadian Open make history

For the first time in 19 years, four under-21 players have made it to the fourth round at consecutive ATP Masters 1000 events.

Fonseca, Rafael Jodar, Jakub Mensik and Learner Tien all won their third-round matchups in Montreal.

It follows the Italian Open, where Jodar, Tien, Dino Prizmic and Martin Landaluce made it to the fourth round.

Where do you think Rafael Jodar will be ranked at the end of 2026?

The last time this happened was in 2007, with the feat occurring across the ‘Sunshine Double’.

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet all advanced to the fourth round of the Indian Wells.

Djokovic, Nadal, Murray and Juan Martin del Potro then followed suit by doing so at the Miami Open.

Arthur Fils also into the fourth round of the Canadian Open

While he does not quite make the under-21 cut-off anymore, 22-year-old Arthur Fils is also through to the fourth round of the Canadian Open.

Seeded 18th at the tournament, Fils has beaten Zachary Svajda and Mariano Navone so far in Montreal.

He will take on Cameron Norrie for a place in the quarterfinals, whom he has never faced before at ATP Tour level.

Fils, coached by Goran Ivanisevic, is looking to capture his second title of the season and his first ATP Masters 1000 crown.

The Frenchman has made the semifinals twice during this year’s Masters series, with final-four finishes at the Miami Open and the Madrid Open.
