Ben Shelton, the world number 10, is the highest-ranked player left in the Canadian Open draw.

Four of the ATP’s top five players did not take part in the event, including Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Who is the best hard-court player in tennis today?

The US Open is right around the corner…

The likes of Alex de Minaur and Daniil Medvedev – both ranked in the top 10 – have since exited the event.

Shelton, who is seeking to win back-to-back Canadian Open titles, is seeking to add his name to the list of players who have appeared in a Masters 1000 final in the last 12 months.

Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Valentin Vacherot are among the nine Masters 1000 finalists of the last year

Jannik Sinner, the world number one, has reached the most Masters 1000 finals over the last year.

The Italian superstar has reached seven finals, winning six of those finals.

His only final loss occurred at the 2025 Cincinnati Open, where he was forced to retire at 0-5 in the first set due to illness.

Carlos Alcaraz is the only other player who has qualified for more than one Masters 1000 final since August 2025.

As mentioned already, the Spaniard won the 2025 Cincinnati Open following Jannik Sinner’s retirement in the final.

Sinner had his revenge eight months later, beating Alcaraz 7-6, 6-3 in the Monte Carlo Masters final – snatching back the world number one ranking in the process.

Seven others have reached Masters finals since the 2025 Cincinnati Open: Valentin Vacherot, Arthur Rinderknech, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Daniil Medvedev, Jiri Lehecka, Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud.

  • 2026 Miami Open: Jannik Sinner bt. Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-4
  • 2026 Monte Carlo Masters: Jannik Sinner bt. Carlos Alcaraz 7-6, 6-3

Who will reach the 2026 Canadian Open final?

As mentioned already, the clear favourite in the top half of the Canadian Open draw is defending champion Ben Shelton.

If the American beats Joao Fonseca on Sunday, he will likely need to go through Jakub Mensik and Learner Tien to reach the final in Montreal.

Spanish youngster Rafael Jodar is perhaps the pick of the bunch in the bottom half of the draw.

Can Rafael Jodar fill the void left by Carlos Alcaraz?

He’s certainly stepped up in his absence so far…

Jodar has now reached three consecutive Masters quarter-finals following his victory against Jiri Lehecka on Saturday – a result that has seen him rise to 12th in the ATP’s live rankings.

On Monday, the 19-year-old will play fellow youngster Arthur Fils for a spot in the semi-finals.
