Meccha Chameleon is one of 2026’s biggest video game anomalies. Despite some dodgy malware issues, the game’s early sales outpaced Resident Evil Requiem and Crimson Desert. It rocketed further up the Steam charts, outselling multiple huge titles in the platform’s summer sale, and it quickly went on to become 2026’s best-selling game so far. These stellar sales numbers have shown no sign of slowing down, either.
This morning, its developers announced that the game has sold 20 million copies in just two months, and while the data is difficult to compare, this makes it one of the fastest-selling video games ever created.
Meccha Chameleon Is One Of The Fastest-Selling Games Ever
While big corporations continue to fire staff and close studios as they try to come up with the next live-service hit (and inevitably fail), games like Meccha Chameleon prove that people just want to have fun, and they aren’t looking to have every penny extracted from their wallets.
The Japanese hide-and-seek-inspired title, developed by just two people, has now sold 20 million copies in two months, putting it among some of the industry’s behemoths.
While it’s impossible to discern how high it ranks, with companies reporting their sales at different points in a game’s life cycle, we’ve looked at the fastest-selling games ever, and Meccha Chameleon is up there with the best.
Grand Theft Auto 5 is the undisputed king of fast-selling games. It achieved 32 million sales within just six weeks. Its sequel, due out this November, is likely to break every record ever, but the fact that Meccha Chameleon is even mentioned in the same conversation as this series is a credit to its developers.
Black Myth Wukong is seemingly the second-fastest-selling game ever, shifting 20 million units in its first month. Palworld reached 25 million players in its first two months, many due to Xbox Game Pass, but then things get a little dicey, and the comparisons become harder to make.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet almost definitely outpaced Meccha Chameleon, with 18.2 million copies sold in its launch month. Tears of the Kingdom, on the other hand, probably missed out, with that game selling 18.5 million in roughly two months.
Cyberpunk 2077 managed 13.7 million copies in its first 21 days, but it took almost two years to hit 20 million. Elden Ring sold 12 million copies in 17 days but took roughly a year to reach 20 million. Hogwarts Legacy, a game that sold 12 million copies in two weeks, took ten months to reach 20 million total.
Using these messy data points, it almost certainly looks like Meccha Chameleon sits in the five fastest games to hit 20 million sales, which, given its small development team, is nothing short of a miracle.
