Roger Federer is the most successful player in the history of the Cincinnati Open Men’s Singles event.

Federer, a 20-time major champion, won a record seven Cincinnati Open titles before retiring from his playing career in 2022.

He has also won the most matches in tournament history [47].

Despite the ‘big three’ era ending, tennis is better now than it was 10 years ago – Prove me wrong!

Federer won his seven titles between 2005 and 2015, beating the likes of Andy Roddick and Novak Djokovic in the finals.

Federer is also the only man to achieve an impressive 21st-century feat in Cincinnati.

Federer defended his Cincinnati Open crown on two occasions: in 2009 and 2010, and in 2014 and 2015.

Federer’s other three titles were won in 2005, 2007, and 2012.

No other player has defended their Cincinnati Open Men’s Singles title this century, and that streak will continue at this year’s event.

Roger Federer’s seven Cincinnati Open triumphs

  • 2005: Federer beat Andy Roddick 6-3, 7-5
  • 2007: Federer beat James Blake 6–1, 6–4
  • 2009: Federer beat Novak Djokovic 6–1, 7–5
  • 2010: Federer beat Mardy Fish 6–7, 7–6, 6–4
  • 2012: Federer beat Novak Djokovic 6–0, 7–6
  • 2014: Federer beat David Ferrer 6–3, 1–6, 6–2
  • 2015: Federer beat Novak Djokovic 7–6, 6–3

This is because Carlos Alcaraz – the defending champion – has withdrawn from this year’s tournament to aid his recovery from a troublesome wrist injury.

Jannik Sinner, last year’s finalist, has also withdrawn from the 2026 Masters event.

Roger Federer’s only loss in a Cincinnati Open final

After winning seven Cincinnati Open finals in a row, the Swiss legend’s streak came to an end in 2018.

Novak Djokovic, who had lost thrice before to Federer in Cincinnati finals, won the 2018 title after beating the Swiss star 6-4, 6-4 in the final.

By defeating Federer, Djokovic became the first player in tennis history to win all nine Masters 1000 events.

“Obviously it’s a very special moment to stand here for the first time with the winning trophy here in Cincinnati,” Djokovic said afterwards.

“The hard times I went through, it’s been a rollercoaster ride in my career with injury, taking time off and having a surgery earlier this year. This seems a bit unreal to be back at this level.”

Djokovic went on to win his fourth US Open title later that year, beating Juan Martin del Potro in the final.

Federer was upset in the fourth round by unseeded Australian John Millman.
