The solo developer behind Pokémon Gamma Emerald, a fan-made Generation 3 remake built entirely from scratch, has expressed frustration with the community following its early access release, saying he “can’t wait to be done with this game.”
The project, created by UndreamedPanic, has been in development for two years, with the last 18 months spent working 12-hour days to finish it in time for early access.
A creator exhausted by the reception
The developer said he personally built the games systems, 3D models, UI, music and all sprite animations, drawing 384,000 frames of animation that were later compressed into sprite sheets.
Despite the scale of the solo effort, much of the response online dismissed the project as a simple “mod” or “rom.” He pushed back on X. “Calling it a mod is literally dismissing all of that,” he wrote. “I’ve been working to death for 18 months from the ground up and people are still calling this a rom.”
He also faced criticism, despite a major optimization push that brought the game’s RAM requirement down from around 12GB to under 4GB, allowing it to run at a locked 60 FPS on Steam Deck’s base LCD model.
“Haha it’s so funny how quick people are to dog on all my hard work because it doesn’t satisfy their impossible needs,” he wrote, adding: “I am not gonna fix bugs or look at them for a while, I REALLY need a break from this project.”
Fan backlash has forced developers to respond before. In June 2026, a Chinese romance game cancelled a new love interest entirely after fans protested by mailing cow manure to the studio.
