Japanese Prime Minister has revealed she felt “lonely” after staff got rid of a cockroach that had been living in her home.
When you think of animal companions, your mind goes to cuddly cats, loyal dogs, or even oversized Umamusume horse girl plushies.
However, in a post shared via her X account, Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi revealed that she had befriended a cockroach inside the Prime Minister’s Official Residence in Tokyo.
Takaichi shared the unusual story on August 22 in response to a question about whether she had encountered any ghosts inside the Prime Minister’s Official Residence in Tokyo.
While she hasn’t seen anything supernatural, Takaichi admitted she had been encountering some creepy crawlies that she had befriended. Sadly, her friendship with her cockroach companion didn’t last long after cleaners removed them, leaving the Japanese PM feeling “a little lonely”.

The Prime Minister explained that she was initially shocked when a cockroach ran past her feet because she keeps the residence clean, including carefully wiping the floor beneath her dining table, washing plastic containers, and keeping food waste inside a sturdy trash can with a lid.
Despite being frightened by the insect, Takaichi couldn’t bring herself to kill it due to the influence Osamu Tezuka’s manga Phoenix had on her as a child.
“Phoenix depicts the idea of reincarnation, that ‘life remains connected even as it changes form,’ and this had a profound influence on me as a child. “Perhaps because of that, even now as an adult, I can’t bring myself to kill insects, including cockroaches,” she explained.
“When I saw the cockroach running around the Official Residence, I found myself thinking: ‘Maybe this life, too, is part of the long cycle of reincarnation.’ “For a while, I put up with it, hoping it would somehow leave on its own, but when I told my secretaries about it, they were exasperated,” the PM explained.
Her staff then proceeded to remove the cockroach from her home, and the little critters haven’t appeared since. Despite this feeling relieved. Takaichi admitted that she has felt “a little lonely” and even “a little sad” since its eviction.
