Now that its season has ended, LIV Golf’s immediate future is not about golf, but money. The money the league seeks via investment and the money it owes to various vendors taking legal action.
LIV CEO Scott O’Neil has suggested the league will be moving forward with newfound “operational rigor” as it charts a path for 2027 without Saudi funding, the signs of which are becoming clearer this week as a fourth vendor has taken legal action against the league for unpaid services and/or breach of contract.
The latest suit arrived Wednesday in New York State Supreme Court, where Fantasy Interactive has alleged unpaid invoices from LIV for services rendered to create and maintain LIV’s mobile app and website.
The app, which Fantasy Interactive touts as a leading project on its own website, was assembled in 72 days against the hard deadline of the 2026 season launch. Together with the website application, Fantasy has filed $992,870.75 of unpaid invoices, which breaches the $1 million mark when adding more than $88,000 in interest.
This suit comes on the heels of similar legal action from three other vendors, all alleging unpaid services:
– Deltatre, for technology services related to LIV’s mobile app
– Fresh Tape Media, for producing LIV’s 2026 preseason event
– Mobii Systems, for broadcast/streaming technology
It also comes as LIV Golf laid off a large majority of its staff this week. That move was telegraphed weeks in advance after LIV issued employees a WARN notice in early July, informing them cuts were likely in the fall.
Most LIV staffers received official word Wednesday of their upcoming termination of employment. Company corporate credit cards were deactivated Wednesday, and staff were told their final day of employment is Tuesday, Sept. 1, when they will receive lump-sum payments for their remaining days through Oct. 6 (to satisfy WARN regulations), plus 15 days of severance.
Unpaid vendors and significantly reducing staff are two maneuvers that would make it appear LIV is moving in the direction of filing for bankruptcy, which has been rumored for weeks, if not months. When pressed on that exact topic last week, O’Neil did not deny it as a possibility.
“I don’t think we would rule out any option,” O’Neil said. “I mean, the whole focus is on transaction, transaction, transaction. We’re spending all our time thinking about how we best land this plane and have it landed so we can take off again.”
That transaction has a September deadline, too. O’Neil has explained that LIV has established a signed term sheet with BC Partners and the head of its credit division, Ted Goldthorpe, who presented to LIV players in Indiana last week. The response from players was varied, with some pledging their full allegiance and others saying they need to see more about what the future holds to commit to it fully. O’Neil suggested that LIV was working on a September deadline to reach a definitive agreement, and that the league was receiving interest from separate partners.
