Unai Emery brought up 200 matches as Aston Villa manager against Hull City. The responsibilities and pressures have only become greater.
No Premier League manager has more power at their club. Villa has been crafted and shaped in his image, the hierarchy so enthused they gave him “the keys to the castle.”
Such deep conviction has been vindicated. On Tuesday, Villa start their second Champions League campaign in three seasons. They won the Europa League in May. Villa’s owners want Emery to build a dynasty, to have the longevity associated with Arsene Wenger or Sir Alex Ferguson. A manager only achieves that by guiding a team through periods of transition. They are usually more gradual and less acute than Villa’s.
Perhaps with Pep Guardiola no longer in Manchester, Emery is the Premier League’s most accomplished manager.
His name is sung before every match and often at full-time too. He is a deity among supporters. In the summer’s flux, he was increasingly Villa’s windshield, who could hold everything down while his castle changes, brick by brick.
Emery is the reason why, despite the team’s spine ripped out, fans are mostly enthralled, not panicked, by the idea of him leading their club into a new era. That is pressure.
Shiny new signings excite, but having key players picked off within a matter of months is inherently daunting.
“We must be patient, and we should understand that we are rebuilding the team,” Emery said on Saturday evening. “Now they must get our way and demands, keeping the same mentality that we built, but with different players.”
Emery has been invigorated by the challenge, even if he was surprised by just how many of his long-standing lieutenants, including backroom staff, walked out the front door. He needs a new stimulus to be as relentless and this is his next challenge.
Following the goalless draw at Hull City, leaving Villa with one point from the opening three matches and without a goal, it is not too early to reckon that Villa’s success this season hinges on Emery. The question is how he integrates 10 summer additions and compensates for the losses of significant players.
“You’ve got to adapt quickly,” Matty Cash told The Athletic afterwards. “The manager said it: we’ve got experienced players that have played for him for a long time, so we need to take them (new signings) on our back and show them the way and adapt to their qualities.
“It’s a work in progress. It’s a new Villa, we’re going to be fine, 100 per cent and it’s a point on the road if you look at it like that.”
Mitigation has been the theme of Villa’s start to the season, in defiance of statistics. In consecutive top-flight campaigns, Villa have failed to score in their first three matches. Only Ipswich Town in the early seventies have done as much (or as little).
In that time, Villa have only registered one shot on target. Forty-six per cent of league goals last season came from Ollie Watkins or Morgan Rogers. Both have left. Thirty-two per cent of goals came from set-pieces. Set-piece coach Austin MacPhee has left. Well-drilled and reliable sources of attacking output have vanished.
But Cash’s retort was true. He agreed team-mates will take heart knowing they were in this rut last season — eventually taking five matches to score, after transfer-window theatrics similarly affected them.

Back then, Emery had players he trusted. This time, Villa are more uncertain, more unknown. They have brought in high-potential players — Ibrahim Mbaye, Zion Suzuki and Johan Manzambi — yet no one can be quite sure how quickly they all adapt.
“We know the circumstances; it’s not great when you lose so many key players in a quick space of time,” Cash continued. “It’s obviously not great. I don’t want to sound like I’m making excuses, but we need to adapt quickly.
“We bought brilliant players. Spent money as well. I said in my press conference last week, and I got a bit hammered by the Arsenal fans for saying, ‘Look at them, they spend a lot of money, and we are not.’ We lost key players, do you know what I mean? That’s my point. We’re losing six, seven key players that were all starting. So it’s going to take time. We’ll be all right. We’ll be fine. We just need to keep working.”
From the 10 players signed, only two were in the starting XI at Hull. The other eight were not involved. Emery is inclined to a slow integration of new players, knowing they have to learn their remit within his sophisticated structure. Here, deadline-day acquisition Mbaye was an unused substitute, while Taylor Harwood-Bellis had a watching brief from the stands.
How Emery moulds this new-look, youthful team, dramatically in contrast to his past experienced warhorses, requires a balancing act. Emery has made a point of saying publicly that Villa must be patient while insisting they cannot afford to drop standards.
Emery, post-match, remarked that his players were showing incremental improvements, a sign that pre-season was largely futile given how much change there was in the final weeks of the window, with the goalless draw at Hull underpinned by missed opportunities.
Villa dominated territory, possession and expected goals (1.74), creating three big chances. But when Emiliano Buendia fired over in the second half, Villa flatlined. Three of the five substitutes, Matteo Ruggeri, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Alejandro Garnacho, signed this summer and did not provide an uplift. The other two, Alysson and Tammy Abraham, arrived in January.
Villa will improve and are at the start of a fresh cycle. Longevity brings success and a second era in a manager’s career at one club is a consequence of such. Villa are looking to Emery, now more than ever, to restore the castle he constructed.
