Taylor Fritz has been told he desperately needs to improve his net game following his exit from the US Open.

Fritz was shocked by Francisco Cerundolo in the third round of the US Open in New York, despite taking a two-set lead.

The American ATP star also had the support of the home crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium, but the Argentine won 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Former player Rennae Stubbs has now analyzed the performance of Fritz, who must now continue his search for a maiden Grand Slam title elsewhere.

Taylor Fritz told to improve at the net after shock US Open exit

Speaking on The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, Stubbs said: “The one thing that I think that would be the biggest disappointment up that top part of the draw, and I think that he’s probably rueing every second of his match in the end, was Taylor Fritz.

“Because for a period of time in this tournament, Taylor looked like, ‘Hey, you guys aren’t talking about me. Remember, I’m the one American that’s actually made it to a final of a major, particularly here at the US Open’, where he played spectacularly well a couple of years ago.

“And he was playing pretty well coming in here. And he was winning his first couple of rounds really easily and efficiently.

“And then he was up two sets to love, and then just capitulated and lost to Cerundolo in five sets. Like, what in the hell?

“It’s amazing to me that… Taylor Fritz is a similar height to Jannik Sinner. I think Jannik moves slightly better, but not much. Taylor moves quite well. He moves well.

“But here’s the difference. And I will say it. I don’t care what anyone says. I will say it until I’m blue in the face. Until he improves his net game, he will lose matches like this.

“Because Jannik Sinner will step up, and he will go for it. And he will go forward. And he will not be afraid to push the envelope.

“He will not be afraid to play the more aggressive, sort of not risky tennis, because it’s not risky tennis. It’s controlled aggression.

“And when Taylor gets passive and starts pushing the ball around, a player like Cerundolo is not the player you want to do that against, because he’s not going to miss.

“And he’s going to frustrate you. And he’s going to throw in a little bit of this and a little bit of that to make you uncomfortable and put you in positions on the court that make you feel uncomfortable.

“And if he did that against Jannik, Jannik would step up and go bang and come into the net. And he would push Cerundolo around the court and bully him to the point that Cerundolo would start taking extra chances on his ball.

“And he would miss. Or Jannik would come in and make a volley winner or hit a ball out of the air or whatever.

“Taylor is not that player. And I’m sorry, this was arguably the best chance for him to win a major. He’s up that half of the draw.

“He owns [Alexander] Zverev, even though Zverev beat him the last time he played. But I would say Taylor was compromised at Wimbledon.

“But Taylor absolutely has his number. And there’s not one player in that half of the draw that Taylor Fritz, at his best, is not better than.”

Taylor Fritz blew a monumental chance to win the US Open

The men’s US Open draw has, of course, long moved on from the third round, with the quarterfinals now taking centre stage.

But Fritz may still be pondering his disappointing defeat, particularly given that he blew such a commanding lead.

Moreover, he had already witnessed serial winner Novak Djokovic exit the tournament, while strong favorite Jannik Sinner pulled out of the US Open with injury.

Furthermore, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz was playing in his first event since a four-and-a-half-month absence because of his wrist issue.

And as Stubbs mentioned, Fritz has largely enjoyed his time against Zverev throughout their careers, boasting a 10-6 record against the German.

Instead, one quarterfinal in the top half of the draw sees Zverev take on Botic van de Zandschulp, while Karen Khachanov and Alexander Blockx meet in the other.
