The Golden State Warriors missed out on LeBron James this offseason. After James left the LA Lakers in the summer, several teams wanted to sign him as an unrestricted free agent. Golden State was in the mix, and fans wanted to pair him with Steph Curry.
Unfortunately for the team, James signed a two-year contract to play for the Philadelphia 76ers. On Monday, coach Steve Kerr appeared on the “Tom Tolbert Show” and revealed his encounters with some Bay Area fans. According to Kerr, fans didn’t want James on the team because of his long history of being a rival.

“It’s been really interesting, hearing fans around the Bay, people randomly will come up to me and say, ‘I’m glad we didn’t get LeBron.’ I’m like, ‘Really?’ And they’re like, ‘Yeah. He’s not supposed to be on our team, he’s a rival.'”

However, Kerr preferred getting a chance to coach James after his experience in USA Basketball at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“I get that as a sports fan, it’d be like, ‘Should Magic (Johnson) and (Larry) Bird have played on the same team?’ Just as a coach, and having coached him (LeBron) in the Olympics — sign me up.”
The Warriors might not get another chance at signing James to a deal. He’s 41 years old and will enter his 24th NBA season in the 2026-27 campaign. While he hasn’t set a specific date yet, most people expect him to step away from professional play soon.
Steve Kerr Takes Full Ownership of the Warriors’ Struggles Last Season
Last season, the Warriors struggled to be competitive, especially after Jimmy Butler’s season-ending torn ACL injury. The team finished 10th in the Western Conference with a 37-45 record.
During Steve Kerr’s appearance on the “Tom Tolbert Show,” he took responsibility for the team’s struggles.
“I feel like what put us behind the eight ball last year was we lost four or five games early that we shouldn’t have lost,” Kerr said. “And I put that on myself. Our execution was not where it needed to be. … I don’t think we prepared them well enough to execute under pressure.”
Kerr knows the Warriors need to do better moving forward. The longtime coach said it is on him and the entire coaching staff to get the rest of the team prepared for anything.
This offseason, Golden State did not add anyone significant to the roster. The team’s only additions were guard Brandon Williams and veteran forward Georges Niang. The team looks to be competitive ahead of the new year.
