With the Toronto Blue Jays wrapping up an underwhelming season as the team will miss the playoffs, a year removed from making the World Series in 2025, the biggest story around the ball club surrounds Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and his contract. Guerrero would make controversial comments about his Blue Jays contract that many people in the baseball world took issue with, as the star has now apologized for what he said.

For context, in an interview with Dominican broadcaster Verónica Batista earlier this week, Guerrero was asked about his 14-year, $500 million contract extension with his disappointing season in 2026. He would go as far as to say that the money “wasn’t for what I’m going to do,” but “for what I already did.”
“I want people to understand one thing,” Guerrero said in Spanish, via MLB.com. “The money they gave me wasn’t for what I’m going to do. It was for what I already did. They didn’t pay me because I’m going to hit 40 every year. They paid me for what I already accomplished. People are confused about that, but I think the same way they do. Like, sometimes I even say to myself: bro, they gave you all that money, and you’re out here doing nothing. I try.”

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Guerrero even doubled down on his comments, via The Athletic, but Friday saw him issue an apology, regretting his comments.

“I regret my comments the other day. I felt from my heart that my fans and my teammates needed an apology from me. I’m going to continue working hard to make my contract great,” Guerrero said, via Arden Zwelling.
Guerrero emphasized how it’s been a “disappointing” season for him and how “hard” it is on him, as he’s recorded a .263 batting average with nine home runs and 56 RBIs in 142 games. The 27-year-old even said that his father, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., told him what he said was “wrong” and to make sure he gave an apology.
