The 2026 Laver Cup finished on Sunday, and it’s fair to say that it was another successful edition of Roger Federer’s co-creation.
Team Europe recaptured the title by beating Team World 13-5 across a captivating three days of tennis, featuring some of the world’s very best players. Despite its awkward placement in the ATP calendar, the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz all forwent the opportunity to rest ahead of the Asian swing and wanted to play at the Laver Cup instead.
The Laver Cup has received plenty of criticism from fans, who label it as an exhibition, but Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, thinks the event gets almost everything right.

In a post on his Instagram page, Mouratoglou said: “I love almost everything about the Laver Cup. Almost. I think it’s an amazing competition. First of all, you have top players. Second, you have a competition that is very different, and I think it’s a great product also for the fans.
As a professional tennis player, you’re very much alone on tour. That’s the only moment when you can feel playing for a team and with a team, and players love it. Because of its structure, there are so many exchanges. Players talk to each other during the matches. We hear what they say. There is a lot of coaching on the court.
How do you feel about the Laver Cup – is the tournament at all important?
“Yes, it’s modern, but we bring together the history of tennis. When you have so many different generations from Rod Laver, Yannick Noah, Agassi, of course, Roger Federer and then the current generation- it’s great to say we want to bring something more modern to tennis, but we respect the tradition, and that’s the message, and I love it.
“The only thing I regret, but that doesn’t affect the quality of the product, is the scoring system. There has been an effort put on the scoring system for the matches not to be too long but I would have gone much further like what we do at UTS. A complete rethought of the scoring system. When you bring such a modern way of seeing tennis, you have to do it all the way. You can’t go halfway. But I think overall, this format is amazing.”
Super tiebreaks are used in decisive third sets at the Laver Cup to avoid matches running on too long.
Where the next edition of the Laver Cup will be held
Team Europe and Team World alternate as hosts of the Laver Cup every year, with London’s O2 Arena being the venue for this season’s edition. San Francisco was the host city for the 2025 Laver Cup, where Team World triumphed for the third time in four years.
Next season, the Laver Cup will head to Los Angeles’ Intuit Dome, which opened in 2024 and is the home of the NBA team Los Angeles Clippers. Los Angeles is the fourth American city to host the Laver Cup, following Chicago, Boston and San Francisco.
Federer’s agent and fellow Laver Cup co-creator, Tony Godsick, was recently grilled on why the event has never had a Team World host city outside of North America. Godsick explained that venues outside of America don’t have the facilities they need in order to showcase the Laver Cup properly.
