Triple H has made significant changes to WWE ever since taking charge of the company’s creative regime. However, despite all the accomplishments, one major question continues to linger over his tenure: why has the company not been able to create new stars in recent times? After John Cena, Roman Reigns has arguably evolved as the new megastar of this generation, but WWE hasn’t been able to create any star of that caliber in recent times.
There’s no denying that building new stars takes time, consistent push and proper spotlight. Triple H had all of those to create a few in the past four years. However, established names have continued to occupy prominent positions on the card instead of rising names getting that spotlight. From questionable booking decisions to missed opportunities, there are several factors that could explain why The Game has struggled to develop its next big megastars.
Thanks for the submission!
Here are three reasons why Triple H has failed to create new stars in WWE:
#3. Constant focus on part-timers & seasoned veterans
A major criticism of Triple H’s creative regime in WWE is the heavy reliance on elite veterans and established names to anchor marquee feuds and storylines. Top stars like Roman Reigns, CM Punk and Cody Rhodes have occupied the mainevent spot while veterans like Sami Zayn, Randy Orton and Gunther have been looming in the other relevant big spots.
This has therefore limited the opportunities for Triple H to create new stars that could emerge as the face of the new era. There is no denying that seasoned veterans and decorated stars draw massive ratings and boost ticket sales. But keeping them permanently cemented in the main event spotlight creates a bottleneck, curtailing the prospect of making new stars.
Triple H has adamantly stuck with this pattern over the past few years. Instead of taking bold risks to transition the company into its next era, WWE frequently relied on proven multi-time champions. This very booking philosophy has hindered rising names and upstarts from truly developing themselves as the next big face of the Stamford-based promotion.
#2. Not pushing stars who got over on their own
One of the most frustrating patterns in WWE over the past few years has been killing the organic momentum of stars that grew naturally. Triple H seemingly doesn’t like when a talent gets over among fans on their own. Several superstars like LA Knight, Karrion Kross and Joe Henry once became massive fan favorites, with the WWE Universe heavily backing them.
They ignited the crowd entirely through their own magnetic energy and charismatic work. Despite the undeniable crowd backing, the creative team never pulled the trigger on elevating these self-made acts into true franchise players. LA Knight had every potential to become the biggest star of this generation, given the Stone Cold level of pop he was once receiving.
Besides, Joe Hendry’s aura was electrifying when he arrived in WWE and he had every potential to be a high-profile name in this industry. Regardless, the company never gave these stars the push they deserved. The political booking philosophy of not pushing talents who got over on their own has hindered the possibility of creating new stars in this crowded landscape.
#1. TKO’s power grab on high-profile WWE stars
There’s no denying that WWE’s current product has changed dramatically and drastically ever since it came under TKO. Most importantly, it has fundamentally shifted the company’s operational priorities. The executive directors heavily favor high-profile names who are guaranteed to move merchandise, secure lucrative deals and sell out arenas through their brand recognition.
And due to this, big names like Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins and CM Punk have maintained their hold on the upper tier. However, this has become a major hurdle in the process of making new stars in the company. This is because Triple H’s creative autonomy is frequently constrained by TKO’s business models that mandate the heavy presence of proven mainevent draws in the spotlight.
This corporate interference has therefore created a systematic barrier preventing the WWE CCO from taking organic risks on rising names. While the company does give rising names like Oba Femi, Bron Breakker, Jacob Fatu and Trick Williams the spotlight, the limitations in their booking due to TKO’s preferences have prevented the company from creating megastars.
