Final Fantasy 14 players spent the outage watering locked-out strangers’ crops so nobody came home to a dead garden overnight.
A pair of critical PHP vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, forced Square Enix to take the MMO’s patch servers offline on October 21, slamming the door on anyone who had already logged off.
Console regulars and the chronically AFK inherited the environs, wandering a smorgasbord of near-silent housing wards. Square Enix even paused housing demolition timers as a precaution.
It would have been easy to do nothing, bhis community does not do nothing, as anyone who read about players earning a mount for paying their taxes already knows.
No onion famine on our watch
Overnight, a Reddit post cheekily titled “PHP Watering Service” flung open the floodgates. Locked-out players dropped their ward and plot numbers, since Final Fantasy 14 housing is gloriously old-school like that, and those still toiling in-game fanned out to water whatever needed it.
They didn’t ask for any sort of payment in return; it’s just good-natured, green-thumbed strangers watering somebody else’s hard-earned crops.
Losing your crops might seem like a tiny loss in a game as big as Final Fantasy 14, but the stakes were not small. Thavnarian Onions aren’t some small fry crop, as the seeds demand cross-breeding, then five full days of growth, so one thirsty weekend could sever weeks of work.
Players who were forced to sit out for a single evening would lose entire harvests. Instead, the community rallied together, with even the AFKers masquerading as living room furniture becoming accidental guardians of whole fiefdoms.
Square Enix said it expected to restore logins on October 22, roughly 18 hours after the doors shut. When the queues finally return, expect chuffed gardeners and very relieved onions, the same stubborn goodwill that carried players through the Dawntrail launch queues and its marathon server congestion, and proof the realm is worth logging back into.
