Reddit is preparing to make a major change to how people access the platform, with plans to move toward a primarily logged-in experience after more than 20 years of allowing users to browse without an account.

The change was announced by Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, known online as Spez, who explained that the company wants to improve personalization, protect its data, and deliver more relevant advertisements.

While Reddit has traditionally allowed visitors to browse most of its content without signing in, that experience could soon become more limited as the company begins testing new restrictions.

Reddit explains why it wants users to log in

In an October 29 post titled “About that login screen,” Huffman confirmed that Reddit is moving toward a primarily logged-in platform, citing several reasons behind the decision.

“We’re making the change because it’s better for user experience, better for our ads business, is more in line with safety regulations, and more protective of Reddit data,” he explained.

According to Huffman, Reddit has grown to the point where personalization is increasingly necessary to help users find relevant communities and discussions.

The company also wants more visitors to participate in the platform’s core features, including joining communities, voting on posts, and leaving comments, all of which already require an account.

Another major factor is protecting Reddit’s data from unauthorized collection.

Huffman explained that most unauthorized scraping of Reddit’s content currently happens through its logged-out experience. Requiring users to sign in would give the company greater control over how its data is accessed and used.

The change could also benefit Reddit’s advertising business by allowing it to serve more personalized ads while helping the platform comply with regulations around the world.

However, Huffman emphasized that users will not be required to provide their real names or verify their identities simply to log in.

“We don’t need your name. We don’t need to know who you are. We don’t need to know your identity. Honestly, we don’t want to know,” he said.

Reddit will begin testing login restrictions outside the US

Despite the planned changes, Reddit does not intend to completely eliminate access for people who aren’t signed in.

Huffman acknowledged that allowing visitors to view the front page and access posts shared through search engines or external links remains important.

The company has not yet determined exactly which parts of Reddit will require an account.

Instead, it plans to begin testing the new experience in select markets outside the US over the coming months before deciding how to proceed.

Reddit is also bringing back a redesigned incognito mode in its mobile app, allowing users to browse and search without affecting their account’s activity or personalization.

The feature will be read-only, meaning users won’t be able to interact with posts while using it.

Users will also have the option to disable personalization while logged in, although Huffman warned that doing so could make the platform less useful.

For now, Reddit has not announced a specific date for a broader rollout or confirmed whether the changes will eventually apply to all users worldwide.
