Yaxel Lendeborg is flourishing in the way the Golden State Warriors once hoped that Jonathan Kuminga would.
Ahead of this NBA season, Kevin Garnett stated that Yaxel Lendeborg would bring the Golden State Warriors what they thought they were getting with Jonathan Kuminga.
Kuminga was the Warriors seventh overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, but he struggled to win over head coach Steve Kerr. Even in his third season in the playoffs he was a DNP for critical games. Last season Kuminga was traded to the Atlanta Hawks.
Lendeborg is already proving Garnett right, and showing to be everything the Warriors hoped they were getting with Kuminga.
He scored 31 points in the Warriors win over the Nuggets, helping the team earn their first win of the season. Lendeborg even admitted that he was disappointed with his own shooting in the win.
The rookie has high standards, and he compares favorably with predecessor Kuminga, who failed to break the 30-point mark during his rookie season.
While it took Lendeborg only four games, it took Kuminga 178 games to hit the 31 points or higher mark – in his third season.
Kuminga now with the Timberwolves
Jonathan Kuminga signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the offseason, and they face Lendeborg and the Golden State Warriors later this week.
The showdown between the pair is a fascinating subplot, but you suspect Lendeborg will be more concerned with Timberwolves’ star player Anthony Edwards. He has not hidden from any challenges facing him so far – and has another bout with Luka Doncic upcoming.
Kuminga’s scoring log this season has been low-key as he finds his place on the team, settling in behind Edwards and LaMelo Ball.
A matchup against the Warriors could be exactly what Kuminga needs to spark his season into life.
But whatever happens, he won’t be missed in the Bay, they have a new young exciting star now.
