The Dallas Mavericks have a chance to return to winning ways thanks to Cooper Flagg, says Bill Simmons.
Cooper Flagg was the number one overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, thrust into a very tough spot with the post-Luka Doncic Dallas Mavericks. The franchise firing Nico Harrison and trading Anthony Davis has removed some of the negativity surrounding the team.
Last season the Mavericks struggled, and ended with a 26-56 record.
Entering the 2026-27 season, the Mavericks’ over-under was set at 33.5 for the season, with oddsmakers projecting another losing season for the team.
Bill Simmons believes that after watching the Mavericks over their first four games of the season, Cooper Flagg has stood out to such an extent that they could end the season with a winning record.
Simmons told his podcast: “Cooper Flagg looks absolutely spectacular. Absolutely spectacular. This is holy s*** level. And my overreaction would be, ‘I’m not sure it’s possible for him to be on an under .500 team anymore’.”
Honestly, Mavs fans, who’s your least favorite player in franchise history? 😤

How good is Cooper Flagg right now
Cooper Flagg has played in three of the Dallas Mavericks four games this season, and they have a 2-1 record in the games he has started. He missed the game against the San Antonio Spurs with a mild shoulder strain, which they lost 122-106.
Flagg is averaging 25.0 points over the three games he has played, and opened his season with a 32-point performance in their loss to the still unbeaten Rockets.
Simmons believes that Flagg is already one of the league’s top 20 players and argues that his skillset is unique for his age.
He said: “He’s a top 15 to 20 guy in the league now. He does whatever he wants offensively. He can go full speed left or full speed right already, get to the rim and finish, at age 19, which basically LeBron is the only other guy I’ve ever seen be able to do that at that age.
“He’s unstoppable, he’s competitive, he does everything you’d want, and it feels like he went up a level from last year.”
