Alexandra Eala’s breakthrough on the WTA Tour is threatening to change tennis forever, and for the better.
Her impact has been sudden and overwhelming, introducing hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of new fans to the sport and forging atmospheres unlike anything we have ever seen before for a player of her achievements.
However, managing the expectations of a rise so rapid cannot be easy, and for that, she and her team must be praised.
Joan Bosch is the man credited with her impressive development, and now, speaking to Dyan Castillejo, the Spanish coach has offered his thoughts on what makes her so special, and how they plan to keep improving.
Alex Eala’s coach explains how she has broken into the top 20
He began by trying to explain why Alexandra Eala has become such a top 20 fixture.
His answer was simple: “Well, I mean, Alex has many good things, like all the players; they are top 20, and to be top 20, you need to do a few things good.
“And she’s still improving, so I would not say just one. I think she has good forehand, good backhand, return is good. Serve is also improving. Mentality is also good. Physically, she’s improving also.
Which of these four WTA players do you think is most likely to win a Grand Slam in 2027?
“I mean, to be there, you cannot have many bad things because, you know, people are very good. Everyone is playing well; you have many players, and they improve a lot. So new and young players also try to get into the top. So there is a lot of work to do, and the goal is to work day by day and let’s see; we can continue like this.”
Then, asked how she can get better and rise up the rankings, Bosch continued: “To be higher is not to get better sometimes. So to be better, it means that we played the match last week against Shnaider. And we play again. So to be better, it means to do better than last week; just to be better.
“I mean, that’s what we will try. If not, we have to sit and think about it and continue working.”
Eala and Shnaider played a hugely entertaining and competitive match in Tokyo just yesterday, demonstrating that very progress which Bosch called for.
The Filipina is now due to head to Hong Kong to participate in what is expected to be her final tournament of the season.
