Giving out free upgrades to older games isn’t something new. Devs have often announced free next-gen upgrades and also complete edition upgrades for some older games. The latter is precisely what Obsidian announced it was going to do, with regard to The Outer Worlds. The 2019 title received a sequel last year, so it looked like loyal fans were going to be rewarded.
At least that’s what Obsidian said on its forum on April 30. “If you have at least the base edition of The Outer Worlds in your library before May 27th, you will be receiving the Spacer’s Choice Edition free. That’s right, free! This is for all platforms that the Spacer’s Choice Edition is on,” however, it seems this hasn’t happened.
The Outer Worlds Fans Aren’t Getting Promised Free Upgrade
As mentioned in a post by FootballRacing38 on Reddit, it seems Obsidian has either forgotten about or knowingly changed its decision to give out the Spacer’s Choice Edition for free. “About three weeks ago, Obsidian clearly announced that if you have bought the original Outer Worlds before May 27, you will get the spacer’s edition for free on May 27. However, they just announced that this is now not the case and you need to buy both dlc as well,” they said.
What’s more, the Obsidian Support X channel has said, “Due to unforeseen platform limitations, Xbox One and PS4 digital owners will need to own both DLCs to be eligible for the upgrade.” There’s no word on what these unforeseen circumstances are, but this isn’t what Obsidian promised in April.
The initial offering looked like a great way for those who played the base game to experience the DLC for free. However, it now looks like that will no longer be possible for previous-gen consoles for whatever reason. Perhaps someone at Obsidian wasn’t okay with people getting to play the DLC for free. Whatever the case may be, fans feel cheated by what has happened.
