Victor Wembanyama reached the NBA Finals by turning San Antonio’s biggest matchup edge into something harder to plan for: a 7-foot-4 scorer the Knicks have to honor above the arc and a rim protector they have to account for on the other end.

The Spurs open the 2026 NBA Finals against the Knicks on June 3, and Wembanyama’s Western Conference finals gives the series a tactical hinge. New York has lived in the paint through three rounds. San Antonio’s best player can pull that defense apart without every possession starting on the block.

How Wembanyama flipped the West finals

San Antonio trailed Oklahoma City 2-1, and Wembanyama responded by reframing his own role. “I need to be more of a team player,” he said after the Game 3 loss. He then won Games 6 and 7 and took home the Earvin “Magic” Johnson Trophy as conference finals MVP, averaging 27.3 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.7 blocks in the series while scoring at least 20 in every game and shooting 40% from three.

Game 6 was the swing. Facing elimination, Wembanyama hit two threes and blocked a shot in the opening 90 seconds, went 3-of-4 from deep in the first quarter, and finished with 28 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in a 118-91 rout that forced Game 7. “We played together,” he said. “We passed the ball and trusted the game plan as always.”

The Knicks cannot sit in one coverage

New York has to decide how much help it keeps near the rim when Wembanyama spaces above the break. Switch a smaller defender onto him and San Antonio flows into high catches and seals. Keep a big attached to him outside and the Spurs open driving lanes for their guards and cutters.

His shooting is the pressure point. The Spurs do not need volume from him beyond the arc. They need him to punish the possessions where New York protects the paint first and recovers second.

The depth that makes the spacing dangerous

Seven Spurs scored in double figures in Game 7, and the most important number belongs to Julian Champagnie, who scored 18 of his 20 points on six threes. That is the spacing thesis in one line. When defenses collapse toward Wembanyama, San Antonio has shooters who make them pay.

The best Spurs possessions will not all be Wembanyama isolations. Stephon Castle (16 points, six assists) and De’Aaron Fox (15 points, five assists) generate early movement, and Wembanyama’s gravity leaves someone open on the second side. Dylan Harper and Keldon Johnson gave San Antonio 23 more off the bench.

The other end of the floor

Wembanyama is not only a spacing problem. He became the first player ever to collect 50 or more blocks and 25 or more made threes in a single playoff run, the rare big who stretches a defense and erases shots at the rim. The Knicks have to score against him at the basket and chase him off it, in the same possession.

The Knicks’ counter is physicality

New York has a clear path. The Knicks rode an 11-game playoff winning streak into the Finals with a record point differential, and their guards can test San Antonio’s young players with pressure, tempo and repeated paint touches. Jalen Brunson, the conference finals MVP in the East, leads a team built to win the first collision on every possession.

The series should be read through shot quality more than Wembanyama’s point total. If his threes drag New York out of its preferred shell, San Antonio’s offense becomes far more than one young star carrying a Finals matchup alone.

The historical frame

Wembanyama’s run already sits in rare company. He is the youngest player to lead his team in scoring entering the Finals since 1957, and the first 22-year-old to do it since LeBron James in 2007. At 22 years and 146 days, he is the second-youngest player ever to lead a team to the Finals, behind only Magic Johnson.

The more immediate question for New York is not the history. It is whether the Knicks can keep their defense connected when the league’s most unusual big man is comfortable shooting over it, passing around it and protecting the rim behind it.
