After years of trying, Alexander Zverev finally captured an elusive Grand Slam title at the French Open.

Zverev emerged victorious in the final on Sunday against Flavio Cobolli, overcoming the Italian in five sets to hoist a major trophy for the first time.

He became the first German to win the men’s singles title at Roland Garros, and the first from his country to win a men’s singles Grand Slam since Boris Becker in 1996.

He’s finally got his first!

After the early exits of Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic in Paris, Zverev became the overwhelming favourite to go all the way, and he did not crumble under the pressure.

With his triumph, the world number two has now done enough to warrant a place in the Hall of Fame, according to former American players John Isner and Steve Johnson.

Steve Johnson and John Isner react to Alexander Zverev’s victory

In an episode of ‘Nothing Major‘, Johnson said: “Grand Slam champion, World Tour finals, a million Masters series, a billion titles, Olympic gold medal.

“The only thing he is missing I guess is Davis Cup. But nobody cares any more about that.

“I would say back in the day that was a bigger deal but not any more, I feel like he is missing nothing, apart from number one in the world.”

Where will Alexander Zverev finish 2026 ranked?

Isner added: “Yeah, but his overall resume is ridiculous. He has just vaulted himself up to fourth all time prize money.

“But having said that, he went ahead of Alcaraz and Sinner, who will have more prize money when all is said and done, but he is a Hall of Famer. He could stop right now, and he’d be a Hall of Famer.”

Brad Gilbert does not think Alexander Zverev would be in the Hall of Fame

Though Zverev has emerged victorious at almost every big level in tennis, Coco Gauff’s former coach, Brad Gilbert, does not think he gets into the Hall of Fame just yet.

Speaking on the ‘Big T‘ podcast, Gilbert said: “I would say that he’s not in now, but who knows what the criteria is, win another Slam or get to number one in the world, because those are usually guarantees.”

Former French Open semifinalist Andrea Petkovic added: “I think he should be in the Hall of Fame right now.

“As a German, I think we need more Germans in the International Hall of Fame, so I’m very biased there.”

Zverev now has 25 titles to his name and is an Olympic gold medalist.
