Denny Hamlin won his third consecutive race in the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday, winning at Pocono Raceway. But while the result itself was historic, it was an unusual post-race incident that caught fans’ attention.
During his frontstretch interview after taking the checkered flag, a spectator from the grandstands threw a banana toward the track. It landed just behind Hamlin while he was speaking, quickly going viral online. NASCAR insider Steven Taranto shared the clip on X, writing:
Thanks for the submission!
“I think someone threw a banana on the frontstretch during Denny Hamlin’s interview.”
Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota featured a bright King’s Hawaiian paint scheme promoting the brand’s Minions-themed “Shake ‘Em Banana Bites.” The yellow-heavy livery, tied to the animated franchise’s banana obsession, had already been one of the most talked-about schemes of the Pocono weekend.
The fan interaction reflected how closely the promotion had landed with the crowd. On track, the performance matched the attention. Hamlin secured his third straight win for the first time in his Cup Series career and his fourth victory of the 2026 season. The result also marked his eighth win at Pocono, further strengthening his reputation at the “Tricky Triangle.”
After his first win with the sponsor, Hamlin said post-race:
“I got to say, awesome for the King’s Hawaiian car. Finally, the King’s Hawaiian curse is over. They thought my head was getting a little big, so they maybe put me in this suit this week to bring me back down where I need to be.”
The victory came at a crucial point in the season. With just ten races left in the regular season, Hamlin has now significantly reduced the points gap with Tyler Reddick to just 19, positioning himself as a serious contender for the title.
Denny Hamlin reacts after dominant Pocono win

Denny Hamlin’s race began from the pole, and while he did not control every phase, his long-run pace once again proved decisive. He led 28 laps overall and stayed within striking distance as strategies diverged across the field.
The final stint defined the race. While teammate Christopher Bell attempted to stretch fuel, Hamlin relied on fresher tires and consistent lap times to close a double-digit gap. With five laps remaining, he completed the pass for the lead and never looked back. Bell eventually ran out of fuel, dropping down the order and confirming the No. 11 car as the winner.
Speaking after the race, Hamlin highlighted the team effort behind it:
“First win here, just so special here. Pocono has mastered the fan experience, from the crowd in the stands to the infield here. Nick (Igdalsky) and his whole team have just done an amazing job… I’m just so happy for this whole Joe Gibbs Racing team. This is a team effort, giving me the fast cars, the pit crew is flawless right now. We’ve just got it all going… It’s like a second home for me.”
The win also carried a personal note. Hamlin acknowledged the shift in fan reception at the track, referencing how the crowd response has evolved over time.
