Matteo Berrettini has taken the 2026 Wimbledon Championships by storming, reaching the third round for the first time in three years. Unseeded at the tournament and now on an upward career trajectory again, the former runner-up has announced himself as one of the dark horses at SW19 this fortnight.
As it turns out, Berrettini was in line to start the tournament on an even bigger note, with a dapper walk-on suit for his entry. Unfortunately, he has now revealed that it was rejected by Wimbledon for violating their fashion rules.
Thanks for the submission!
Interestingly enough, HUGO BOSS had no problems with their other sponsored athlete at the tournament, America’s Taylor Fritz. Fritz turned heads in a stunning all-white suit, drawing comparisons to even the iconic Roger Federer.
But why was Matteo Berrettini’s outfit rejected? The answer came from his own mouth, at his press conference after the second-round win over Arthur Fils. According to Berrettini, Wimbledon felt that his outfit was a “little off-white,” to the point that it could even be seen as brownish, and therefore in violation of the strict all-white rules at the AELTC.
“There was an option actually, but I got refused by Wimbledon. It was not white enough. It was a little bit off-white. Then on the color, it was a little bit brownish. I don’t know. I seen it once. Yeah, so there was an option, but they didn’t let me do it. It’s okay,” Berrettini said.
Interestingly, the Wimbledon runner-up then revealed:
“You could see it actually on my social media. I posted about it. I did a shooting with that. Yeah, unfortunately I couldn’t go on court with that.”
For those curious enough, the outfit indeed has been revealed to the public before on BOSS’ social media. This is the one that could have been:
On the tennis front, Berrettini defeated Fils 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 on Thursday, setting up a blockbuster third-round battle against Grigor Dimitrov.
Matteo Berrettini: “Instead of doing too many ups and downs, I’m a little bit more stable and balanced”
At his press conference, Matteo Berrettini also spoke about his new outlook on enjoying life on the tennis tour, stating that the fact that his body has recovered again is happiness enough for him.
“For a long time I was just thinking about I want to be healthy, I want to feel free to serve, I don’t want to think about my body. Happiness goes through that, the fact that I don’t have to think about my body,” he said.
Berretini added:
“Even if something is coming, I know it’s part of the journey. Before I was looking at it something that shouldn’t happen or couldn’t happen. I learned how to accept the fact that sometimes I have to stop, sometimes I have to say no, I can’t do it. This is my body, this is my career. I also know that I can get up. Instead of doing too many ups and downs, I’m a little bit more stable and balanced. I think this is really important.”
Berrettini truly found his rhythm at the French Open last month, reaching the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in four years.
