Belinda Bencic issues public apology after withdrawing from her match against Coco Gauff, ‘I’m really sorry’

And the Swiss WTA star has now apologised for her decision, having been left hugely disappointed by the abrupt ending of her fantastic Canadian Open run.

Speaking on Centre Court in Toronto, Bencic said of her withdrawal: “Yeah first of all I’m really, really sorry.

“I’m well aware that all of you came out tonight to support us, and I’m really sorry we cannot give you the match. I really tried all I could to be ready for tonight.

“I have some hip issues, it’s like pinching a lot. I tried to warm up, I tried to tape it, tried to take painkillers, and none of that really worked.

“So I’m really sad and disappointed not to be able to play tonight, especially in front of you all and on this beautiful court.”

When asked how difficult it was to reach that decision, she said: “Well it was quite easy. I mean, I couldn’t really move, so I don’t think I had much of a choice there.

“Even if I would come out, I just wouldn’t be able to be even close to my best. So yeah, it was really not possible tonight.”

It’s a real shame for Bencic, who was really impressing at the WTA 1000 tournament, where she was the 12th seed.

She picked up impressive wins over American duo Sloane Stephens and Taylor Townsend in Toronto, before knocking out rising star Alexandra Eala.

Signing off with a comment for the fans on Centre Court, Bencic said: “No message, but thank you so much for all the support.

“I played such a good match, the last match, and I was so excited to play tonight and show another good match.

“I always love to play here in Toronto. I have the best memories, and it’s just really heartbreaking tonight. But I hope to be back and get another chance to play here.”

Gauff now turns her focus to Rybakina, who just edged past Naomi Osaka, while Elina Svitolina and Iga Swiatek meet in the other Canadian Open semifinal.
