If you have ever tuned into a major esports broadcast, you might have noticed the player cams look a bit homogenous. South Korea is the global capital of competitive gaming, but its national rosters have traditionally looked like an all-male fraternity.
That history officially changed this week. Park So-yeon, a 23-year-old competitive gamer, has been selected as the first woman ever to represent South Korea on its official national esports team.
She is heading to Japan for the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, standing alongside absolute legends like League of Legends icon Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok.
Trading Taekwondo Kicks for Hunters and Survivors
Park’s journey to the international stage is about as far from traditional as it gets. She actually spent her early years training as an elite martial artist, studying taekwondo from age seven through college with dreams of wearing the national uniform.
When she hit a competitive wall in martial arts, she set aside her athletic career and picked up the survival horror mobile game Identity V as a casual hobby. But you can never truly turn off the brain of a competitive athlete.
The game recommended by a middle school friend quickly became an obsession, leading her to join top-tier clans, dominate regional tournaments, and build a reputation as an elite teammate.
Carrying the Weight of a Nation and a Gender
While Faker and company are going for gold in mainstream PC juggernauts, Park is competing in Identity V, a hyper-tactical 4v1 asymmetrical horror game where strategy and team communication matter far more than flashy solo plays.
Out of thirty-six athletes representing South Korea across 13 different gaming titles, Park is the lone woman on the roster. She openly admits to feeling a massive sense of responsibility to pave the way for other female gamers who want to break into the pro scene.
With the Asian Games kicking off in September, she is heading into Japan with a single goal: prove that South Korean gaming dominance looks good on everyone, and bring home the metal with no regrets.
