MVK Esports turned a lower-bracket fight into one more shot at Karmine Corp, beating FURIA 3-1 in the League of Legends World Championship Play-In on Saturday, October 17. The reward is a rematch with the team that swept them 3-0 on Friday, October 16, with the winner of the final-round match claiming the last Swiss Stage place, according to reports from Field Level Media and GosuGamers.
There is no slow route back into the bracket here: MVK now have to solve Karmine Corp immediately, rather than wait for another opponent or series. The Vietnamese team already beat FURIA 3-0 in the opening round on Thursday, October 15, but this time the Brazilian side took a game before MVK shut the door.
MVK survived the FURIA fight, then got the rematch
MVK took the first two games in 31 and 27 minutes, putting FURIA under immediate pressure. FURIA answered with a 36-minute win in Game 3, extending the series, but MVK closed out Game 4 in 28 minutes to seal the 3-1 result.
The result sends MVK into Sunday’s decider against Karmine Corp after their earlier 3-0 defeat dropped them into the lower bracket. That first meeting left Karmine Corp one match from the Swiss Stage; MVK’s win over FURIA has now made them the final obstacle between the French organization and qualification. The stakes and the earlier sweep are also central to the Karmine Corp-MVK matchup.
Kratos and Harky lead the numbers
Ngo “Kratos” Khanh was named the series MVP after finishing with a 13-8-25 kill-death-assist line. Teammate Nguyen “Harky” Van Huu posted 22-11-24, while FURIA’s Andrey “Ayu” Saraiva recorded 18 kills.
Those figures came from an all-Vietnamese MVK roster that recovered after losing Game 3 and found the finish in the fourth. GosuGamers reported that jungler Lương Hải “Gury” Long’s Wukong helped MVK set up team fights in that closing game, adding a detail to a series whose final score alone makes the finish look more comfortable than the full four games were.
One Swiss Stage place remains
The final-round match on Sunday, October 18, decides which team advances to the Swiss Stage. That stage runs from October 23 to 31 in Allen, Texas; the knockout stage begins November 3, with the grand final scheduled for November 14 at Barclays Center in New York.
The tournament carries a $5 million prize pool, and the champion is set to receive $1 million. For MVK, though, the immediate task is narrower: turn the lessons of Friday’s sweep into a different result before the last Swiss Stage berth is gone.
