Alexander Zverev gives his immediate reaction after playing for almost five hours in his first US Open match

He is chasing his second career Grand Slam at the US Open, having clinched his first major title at the French Open earlier this year.

Zverev also reached the Wimbledon final, but later fell in the Cincinnati Open round of 16 after losing his first match at the Canadian Open.

The 29-year-old has now shared his delight at getting back to winning ways, although he is well aware of how difficult his opening test was.

Zverev said on court after beating Sonego: “I am just happy that I won. That is it. It was an incredible battle, a lot of ups and downs.

“Nearly five hours for a first round, I think this is the longest first round match I have ever played in my life.

“Credit to him, he played amazing tennis today. He would have beaten a lot of players for sure, but I am happy to be through.”

The world number two added: “I am happy that I have won this kind of battle. This is exactly the kind of match that I needed.

“I struggled the last two tournaments, I did not play well, and sometimes good things happen after you fight through one of these matches. I am hoping that will be the case for me.

“I am just happy that I won, I think everyone is tired and wants to go to sleep, so have a good night and I’ll see you tomorrow.”

He’s finally got his first!

The top seed at the hard court Grand Slam in New York, Zverev now takes on Quentin Halys in the second round.

And history is very much on the German’s side against the Frenchman, with two wins from their two ATP meetings so far.

Halys has reached the second round thanks to his three-hour, 11-minute triumph over Facundo Diaz Acosta.
