Mitchell Robinson began his new stint with the Boston Celtics in their season opener against the Detroit Pistons.
On the night his former New York Knicks teammates were collecting their Championship Rings and raising the banner at Madison Square Garden, Mitchell Robinson was embracing his new start with the Boston Celtics.
The Pistons and Celtics began the season with the 3pm ET tip-off in Detroit, a battle between last season’s first and second seeds in the Eastern Conference.
Mitchell Robinson’s statistics in his Celtics debut
Mitchell Robinson suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter of his Boston Celtics debut, where he appeared to roll it awkwardly. He hobbled to the sidelines and was determined to stay in the game.
Robinson’s numbers on his Celtics debut were underwhelming.
| Minutes | Points | Rebounds | Assists |
| 18 | 4 | 3 | 1 |
Robinson also had 1 steal and 2 blocks. He was 2-2 from the field and 0-2 from free-throws.
The Celtics led the game at halftime and going into the fourth quarter 88-82. But a dramatic fourth quarter swing saw the Pistons fight back and clinch the win, 121-113 in front of their home fans.

Fan reaction to Mitchell Robinson
The center position was a real problem for the Celtics last season after Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis left in the 2025 offseason. One fan expressed delight at seeing Robinson bring his talents to the team.
They wrote: “Tatum controlling the offense and we actually have a competent center rotation thanks to Mitchell Robinson I might just cry.”
Meanwhile a Knicks fan wrote: “As a Knicks fan, I am sick watching how much better Mitchell Robinson makes Boston Celtics. That’s the business, though!”
Celtics vs Pistons top numbers
Paul George put up historic numbers for the Boston Celtics. He scored XX points, the most of any player making his debut for the team.
George ended the night with 38 points. Jayson Tatum was more underwhelming with 13. Derrick White scored 17 and Payton Pritchard contributed 17 from the bench.
The Detroit Pistons leaned on Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren who scored 22 points each and 21 points from Duncan Robinson to power their win. Javonte Green had a further 19 points from the bench.
