Silent Hill is really back, as Konami plans to release a new game in the series every year, whether it’s an original or a remake. This year’s offering is Silent Hill: Townfall, releasing later this week, and although its review scores are strong, they’re not quite as impressive as other modern entries in the iconic horror series have managed.
Where Townfall Sits In The Modern-Day Silent Hill Standings
Townfall, which continues to take Silent Hill on tour with its quaint Scottish backdrop, currently has an 82 on OpenCritic and an 81 on Metacritic. Not terrible scores by any means. However, Konami has recently grown accustomed to the series doing slightly better on the review scale.
Last year’s Silent Hill f, for example, was critically acclaimed and wound up with an average score of 86. The year before that, Konami’s Silent Hill 2 remake kicked off this modern era for the series with an even more impressive average score of 87, making it one of the highest-rated games of 2024.
What Townfall Reviews Are Saying
Here at TheGamer, Kaitlyn Peterson awarded Townfall a score of 3.5 out of a possible five. Despite its slightly lower score than the last two Silent Hill games, Peterson writes, “This is as close as the series has come recently to honoring what made the originals so enjoyable while also bringing the franchise up to modern-day horror expectations.”
Liam Croft at Push Square not only gave Townfall the same score, but also echoed the same sentiments in their review, writing, “Silent Hill: Townfall is a more traditional entry in the horror franchise that succeeds most when replicating what’s come before it.”
Digital Spy’s Joe Draper was a little more glowing about Townfall, particularly when it comes to the new game’s originality, giving it a perfect score. “Silent Hill: Townfall is a breath of fresh air for the genre and a must-play for horror fans,” Draper writes in their five-star review.
What This Means For The Future Of Silent Hill
Although lower than the last two entries in the series, Townfall’s review scores aren’t going to be low enough that they knock Silent Hill off of its new course. The annual release method will almost certainly continue with Konami mixing up new entries that take the Silent Hill vibe to different parts of the world, with remakes of the original games. It has already been confirmed that the original Silent Hill is in the process of getting remade following the success of its sequel’s remake.
As for where the new entries might head next, get your wishlists in now. We’ve jumped from 1960s Japan to the Scottish coast, so it feels like pretty much anywhere, and any time period, is on the table. If you want to experience Townfall for yourself, it launches later this week on September 24.
