Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe should take inspiration from Alexander Zverev as they search for a Grand Slam title

Zverev lost to Jannik Sinner at the All England Club, but recovered to battle past Ben Shelton in the US Open final, claiming his second Grand Slam title. It represented another hugely significant moment in his glittering career, but it should also help inspire others to such success, namely American duo Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe.

Most significantly, Zverev finally won his first two Grand Slam titles at the age of 29. Whether or not he can add to that tally remains to be seen, but it’s clear he’s playing the best tennis of his entire career right now. Moreover, he’s pushing Sinner hard for the world number one spot. And if he manages to overtake the Italian, it would be his first time at the summit of men’s tennis.

Unlike the likes of Sinner and his fellow ATP superstar Carlos Alcaraz, Zverev hasn’t exactly peaked early. And that should help both Fritz and Tiafoe draw inspiration from the experienced German. Both are 28 years old, and should take great confidence from the fact that Grand Slam success is in no way limited to the younger generation. Even then, Sinner and Alcaraz have consistently proven themselves as being able to operate at a different level entirely.

There is, of course, more motivation for an American man to claim a Grand Slam title than for any other player. The disastrous wait for such a champion to emerge has now been extended into at least 2027, with Andy Roddick representing the last male winner from his nation, all the way back at the 2003 US Open.

If there is anything that can really push Fritz and Tiafoe over the line before it is too late for them, it is that major drought. One can only imagine the high regard in which either player would be held in American tennis if they were able to end the Sinner, Alcaraz and Zverev dominance, and the Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal dominance before that.

While Fritz fell in the third round of the US Open this year, he was able to reach the final of the event in 2024, while Tiafoe just reached his third major semifinal in New York, showcasing his ability to turn up on the biggest of stages.

But their possible success will likely have to come sooner rather than later, given both their age and the inevitable comebacks of Sinner and Alcaraz. It’s fair to say Zverev made the very most of their struggles this year, with Tiafoe and Fritz likely needing the duo to be below par or absent altogether to go all the way at a Grand Slam.
