Tennis-wise, the 2026 US Open was a success, with the tournament offering a number of thrilling matches, Carlos Alcaraz’s eagerly anticipated comeback, as well as Serena Williams’ return to Flushing Meadows after four years.

But the tournament’s decision to provide 100 so-called influencers with accreditation is one that caused plenty of controversy among fans.

Matches at this year’s US Open were interrupted by some taking photographs with bright lighting, and others making far too much noise in the middle of play. In response, Wimbledon has since announced that they will not allow an influx of influencers to the 2027 edition of the Championships and will ban items such as ring lights.

Andy Murray reacts to influencers at the US Open

Current players such as Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka have delivered their verdict on influencers at the US Open.

Gauff has previously said: “I think it’s great to have a different demographic to the sport. I have no problem with influencers. I’ve met some of them and follow some of them online.” Osaka has also stated: “I feel like it could be a good thing for people to make the sport of tennis popular to their specific audience, but I think it has to be managed a lot better.”

Now, tennis legend Andy Murray has weighed in.

How many Grand Slams would ‘prime’ Andy Murray win in 2026?

Where would he be ranked?

Asked about the controversy in an interview with The Sports Agents, Murray said: “I only saw a few headlines about it. I didn’t watch much of the US Open, to be honest.

“It’s part of society now, you’re going to have influencers at many different events, but it doesn’t mean they should be exempt from respecting the etiquette and the rules of the sport. Like, making lots of noise during a point is not something that happens in tennis.

“So, just like another fan, if you come in to watch and you’re making loads of noise, then you’re going to get kicked out.”

Murray is currently in London in attendance at the 2026 Laver Cup, where Team Europe will bid to recapture the title from Team World. The Briton has played at the Laver Cup just once before, with the sole appearance coming in 2022.
