Alex Eala was pleasantly surprised by her fans at Wimbledon as she claimed her first-ever main draw win.

The 29th seed at the major tournament in London, Eala stormed to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Renata Zarazua in the first round.

Court 12 at the All England Club played host to the Wimbledon clash, with the winner left both surprised and delighted by the huge numbers that turned up to see her play.

What was the biggest shock from the first round of Wimbledon this year?

Plenty to choose from…

Speaking after her straight-sets win in round one of Wimbledon, Eala said: “I was really surprised. The Filipinos keep surprising me, and surprising me in good ways.

“I know how notoriously difficult it is to get tickets to this event. To have what I would call a full house of Filipinos is amazing.

“I never would have thought that at Wimbledon I would have a home crowd. Super thankful, and I really enjoyed it.

“The atmosphere of the game really changes when there are a lot of people cheering for me or for my opponent. I am happy when there are a lot of Filipinos.”

It was indeed a superb turnout from her supporters, who constantly show up in massive numbers to cheer on their favorite player wherever she is.

And that is undoubtedly a massive advantage for the 21-year-old, who will be hoping for a similar experience in the second round.

Alex Eala ‘very happy’ after maiden Wimbledon main draw win

Also playing doubles at Wimbledon with Nikola Bartunkova, Eala will continue her singles run against Maya Joint.

And the Australian will certainly be full of confidence for that clash, having just knocked out WTA legend Serena Williams.

But Eala is also confident in her current level, saying of her win over Zarazua: “It had its moments. No match is going to be easy here.

“I showed a really good level of tennis and played the important points well. I’m very happy with my first round. I hope to keep the momentum going.”

And discussing the surface at the All England Club, she said: “The grass played pretty good. There were a couple of bad bounces, but there’s always bad bounces on grass.

“I wasn’t the first one to play on it today, so I think it was broken in already. It’s all good. Yes, it could be slippery – we have to be careful.”

Eala must also be careful about her next opponent, with Australian ace Joint having just passed a very tough test.

Not only was she playing against Williams and many, many supporters, but she also emerged victorious on the iconic Centre Court, which is certainly no mean feat.
