The German, who finally clinched his first Grand Slam crown at Roland Garros earlier this year, has taken his grass-court game to a new level at Wimbledon this year, having smashed his previous best result in SW19; a fourth-round finish.

His last opponent comes in the form of defending champion Jannik Sinner, who advanced to a second consecutive final by beating Novak Djokovic fairly comfortably, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Should he find a way to dethrone the Italian on Centre Court, Zverev will complete a historic feat.

No man in the Open Era has ever won their second Grand Slam immediately after winning their first.

It was last accomplished in 1967, when John Newcombe won the US Open after hoisting his first major at Wimbledon earlier that season.

But since the beginning of the Open Era in 1968, no player has managed to match Newcombe.

Some have come close, particularly Daniil Medvedev, who led Rafael Nadal by two sets to love in the 2022 Australian Open final following his 2021 US Open triumph.

He’s finally got his first!

Zverev now has his shot at history, just over a month after capturing that first major title in Paris that had eluded him his entire career.

However he will have to battle past Sinner, against whom he has had a terrible record against in recent years.

Zverev will be well aware of his nine-match losing streak against Sinner, which dates all the way back to 2023 season.

After Sinner won their first-ever clash in 2020, Zverev beat him in their next four meetings on the ATP Tour, including two US Open victories.

But Zverev’s win over Sinner at Flushing Meadows in 2023 was his last in their head-to-head, having been dominated by the world number one ever since.

Of Sinner’s nine consecutive wins, three have come in finals, one of which was the 2025 Australian Open championship match.

In each of their last six matchups, Sinner has not dropped a set to Zverev, with just one set across the half-dozen bouts going to a tiebreak.

While the 14 meetings mean they are very familiar with each other’s games, Sinner and Zverev have never faced off on a grass court.
